Lucasfilm unable to promote standalone until MI's release
Many thought Mission: Impossible 5's release date move from December 25 to July 30 was out of fear of the big bad blockbuster that is Star Wars Episode VII. And while that may have been part of the decision, that hasn't stopped Paramount from making sure that Disney / Lucasfilm don't publicly promote that other Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Rogue One, until the fifth impossible mission has actually hit cinemas.
An official agreement has been made between the two studios to make sure that although Rogue Nation registered their name first with the Motion Picture Association of America in January, in advance of Rogue One, there would be no official attempt to block the use of Rogue One outright.
Instead, outside of a Star Wars fan event in April, there will be no formal announcement or press release about Rogue One until after Mission: Impossible's fifth outing has come out. Unless, of course, someone goes rogue.
Some dates for your diary... Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives on December 18. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation arrives on July 30. Star Wars: Rogue One arrives December 16, 2016.
