As was confirmed earlier this month by director F. Javier Gutierrez, the upcoming horror film Rings is a sequel that is set 13 years after the events that occurred in both The Ring and The Ring Two. Most sequels might use this long stretch of time to have the story detach from the original and move forward with an entirely new plot and group of characters, but that's evidently not what Rings will be doing.
