Exclusive First Poster For The Falling

What Maisie Williams knew...

Forget Maze Runner, here's Mais Runner. In Carol Morley’s latest, The Falling, Maisie Williams is trapped in a strange and sinister web of increasing weirdness at a draconian boarding school in 1969. The film has a new poster that we’re pretty keen on, as well as some new stills to share. Click below for a closer look. {The Falling Poster}

Despite first appearances, Williams and co-star Florence Pugh do not play giant green tree monsters weighing up a bloodthirsty rampage through a GSCE art class. Williams is a bright, serious-minded pupil, Lydia Lamont, who falls under the spell of the free-spirited, rebellious Abbie Mortimer (Pugh). The 16 year-old pair is for a time inseparable, before Abbie starts to drift out of Lydia’s orbit. The title, meanwhile, refers to a spate of unexplained faintings at the school that dramatically complicate the lives of all within its wall.

“The inspiration for The Falling came when I made a short film called The Madness Of The Dance about mass hysteria or mass psychogenic illness, as it’s more correctly called,” explains Morley, whose last, doc/drama Dreams Of A Life, caught the eye. “I became fascinated by the idea that these illnesses are steeping in mystery and contradiction and I felt this would be a great subject for a film.” {The Falling stills} Shades of Picnic At Hanging Rock in the look and feel of this one, as well as the more recent (though slighter) Jordan Scott psychodrama Cracks.

With a cast that also boasts Greta Scacchi, Maxine Peake and Monica Dolan, The Falling hits cinemas on April 24.
