Last year’s Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes was excellent, but if there was one thing it didn’t seem to get a handle on, it was giving Judy Greer enough to do as Caesar’s wife Cornelia. That should now be rectified, as Greer will be back in performance capture gear and on simian duty for follow-up War For The Planet Of The Apes.
As was heralded by pictorial evidence, director Matt Reeves has started shooting the new film, working once again with writer Mark Bomback. Details are sketchy about what the film will cover, though if you watched Dawn you know that (spoiler alert) after a conflict between the human survivors of the virus and Caesar’s simian forces, a sort of truce was reached, one that was threatened by the coming of human reinforcements from outside San Francisco.
Back on the ape side this time out are Andy Serkis as Caesar, Karin Konoval as Maurice and Terry Notary as Rocket. They’re joined by Steve Zahn, playing a new simian. Woody Harrelson, Chad Rook and Gabriel Chavarria are all humans, but there’s no indication yet as to whether any of the cast from Dawn will be returning. The film will be out in the UK on July 21, 2017.
Greer, who notched up appearances in Jurassic World and Tomorrowland, will be seen in Grandma (out December 11), All We Had, Geezer, Wilson and Measure Of A Man.
In tangentially related news, Reeves, who spent a chunk of time working on TV on shows such as Felicity, is headed back as a producer, striking a deal with 20th Century Fox Television to develop new series. The first of the projects he’ll oversee is In The Wild, created and written by Grey’s Anatomy veteran Natalie Krinsky. Based on a magazine article published in June this year and written by Nellie Bowels, it aims to be the coming-of-age story of young workers in Silicon Valley navigating the tricky waters of start-ups and tech life.
