It’s a good day to be a fan of Lauren Graham and her TV daughters. Following news that Gilmore Girls, in which Graham starred alongside Alexis Bledel, is headed for a Netflix-wrangled revival comes word that Graham is working with Parenthood sprog Mae Whitman on an adaptation of The Royal We.
The book, which hit shelves this year, sprang – with a little real-life inspiration – from the brains of Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks, who share their fashion focused wit on the web via the website GoFugYourself.Com.
Graham is aboard to adapt the script, which Whitman will star in, putting a spin on the relationship of Kate Middleton and Prince William. The story finds a young American woman who moves to the UK to study at one of Oxford’s colleges and falls in love with a fellow student. He’s no ordinary bloke though – he just so happens to be the future king of England. Soon, the courtship is being complicated by the royal family’s demands, the need for secrecy and the ever-present spectre of tabloid fame. While the story is fictional, it includes the fact that the prince has a rabble-rousing red-headed brother and our heroine has a sister.
CBS Films nabbed the rights to the book and are likely hoping that both actresses end up starring as well as Graham’s script duties. We already know they have family chemistry from Parenthood. Graham, last seen in heroic pooch pic Max, will be seen in indie comedy Joshy and has her own novel, Someday, Someday Maybe in development as a TV pilot. Whitman starred in The Duff and has a busy voice-over career including upcoming projects A Dog And Pony Show and Rock Dog. Live-action-wise, she stars alongside Martin Starr in tech comedy Operator.
