Matt Smith Joins Netflix's The Crown

Matt Smith Joins Netflix's The Crown

He'll be Prince Philip to Claire Foy's Queen Elizabeth II

Back in November last year, it was announced that Claire Foy was in talks to play Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s new series The Crown. She’s officially taking the throne, and will be joined on screen by Matt Smith and John Lithgow

Adapted and expanded from Peter Morgan’s play The Audience by the writer himself, it’ll follow a similar timeline to the stage version, tracking the Queen's interactions with the many Prime Minsters that have come and gone during her reign. Foy is on to play Her Maj during the early part of her reign from the 1950s onwards, but there’s still no word on whether she’ll be the Queen throughout the whole story (the way Helen Mirren managed it on stage) or if she’ll hand over to other actors as the years pass. It’s also likely that the first season of 10 episodes will stick to the post-war era.

Smith, who we’re now really hoping asks everyone he meets on the Terminator Genisys red carpet, “have you come far?” and “what do you do?” in preparation for his role, will be the Duke of Edinburgh, with Lithgow on as Sir Winston Churchill. The series will hit Netflix next year.
