While it might sound like the crazy idea to make a film all about Tom Hanks’ volleyball pal in Cast Away (hey, someone will do it eventually), Wilson is actually the adaptation of a Daniel Clowes graphic novel that boasts a script by the writer himself. Director Craig Johnson has started shooting and added Judy Greer and Cheryl Hines to the film.
The 2010 graphic novel revolves around the titular misanthrope: an opinionated loner who loves his dog but finds people harder to get along with. He tries though, often haranguing total strangers on a variety of subjects. But when his father dies, leaving him completely starved of human relationships, he sets out to find his junkie ex-wife, learns he has a teenage daughter (Isabelle Amara) he never knew about, and tries for a last haphazard stab at family life. Harrelson will play Wilson, with Dern his ex-wife. How Greer and Hines fit in has yet to be revealed.
“I've been a fan of Dan Clowes' cartoons and writing for years,” says Johnson in a statement. “I own all of his comic books and graphic novels, including Wilson, so when I got the script, I couldn't quite believe it. It's a privilege to be working on a project of this pedigree – a project written by Dan Clowes, starring Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern and brought to life by Fox Searchlight. I'm honoured to be part of it.”
