Finding a new take on the Zorro story has been confounding Hollywood for a while now. Most recently, it looked like 20th Century Fox might have cracked it, but despite seemingly casting Gael Garcia Bernal as the masked hero, nothing really went forward. Now, the rights have switched to Lantica Media and Sobini Films, who are on the hunt for a new director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plan is still to set the film in an apocalyptic future (probably an even more dangerous place since Mad Max: Fury Road blew the competition out of the water), where Zorro is, as usual, helping the innocent and tackling tyrants, but with a sci-fi flavour.
While such filmmakers as Bryan Singer, Ricardo de Montreuil, Rpin Suwannath, Gary Whitta and Justin Marks have tried to bring it to life, the new Zorro has remained steadfastly in limbo. Apparently the new producers, including Sobini boss Mark Amin, are feeling more confident, looking to start shooting next March at Pinewood’s Dominican Republic branch. Once, that is, they find their director. As for the lead? Bernal might still be interested (and even attached), but it could well depend on who takes over the main chair and whether the actor is even available if it does go ahead.
