Ciarán Foy Encounters The Shee

Ciarán Foy Encounters The Shee

Sinister 2 director turns to Irish folklore

Following his debut British indie horror Citadel, director Ciarán Foy was headhunted by Scott Derrickson to direct Sinister 2. It was clearly a happy arrangement for all concerned, since he's staying with Jason Blum's prolific production company Blumhouse for his next project: an "elevated thriller" called The Shee.

The story takes place in Ireland in the 1960s, where a troubled young woman is forced to face up to violent incidents from her troubled past when she travels to a remote island. We might surmise that the "Shee" are the aes sídhe: the elven folk from Irish mythology who can be dangerous and terrible if they're not appeased. Is "Shee" a contraction of "Banshee"? We'll find out...

Foy has form here, having directed the award-winning short The Faeries Of Blackheath Woods in 2006. With Corin Hardy's The Hallow also incoming, it's suddenly a boom time for the mischievous fair folk.

Foy's Citadel cohort Alan Maher is producing alongside Blum and Foy himself. There's no start date or cast for The Shee so far, but Blumhouse tends to move quickly, so expect more soon.

Sinister 2 is out on Friday.
