The last time Jack Black and Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess worked together, the result was Nacho Libre. They’ve decided to reunite for a new comedy called Micronations.
Written by Robert Snow and Christian Magalhaes, whose day job is crafting lines for the sitcom New Girl, the script follows eccentrics and weirdoes deciding to secede their backyards from the rest of the world and declaring them sovereign nations. Black will be a loveable type who ends up becoming the Head of Defence for the nation of Valoria (population: 12), which thrusts him into overblown combat with the neighbouring Wayne County, Nevada. “Once I learned that there were people within the United States who have created their very own countries, I knew I had to make a movie about them,” Hess says in a statement. “Jack and I have been looking for another project to team up on, and the hilarious world of Micronations spoke to both of us.”
There’s no word on a schedule yet, but the comedy has the Buffalo Film Company rustling up the money to get it made. Black will next be seen in The D Train, which arrives here on September 18, while Goosebumps follows on February 5 next year. Hess’ latest, Masterminds, is set for August 7.
