The Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF to its friends and those who enjoy acronyms) kicks off again on June 17 this year, featuring films as varied as Pixar's Inside Out and Patrick Bryce's comedy The Overnight. The opening film will be Robert Carlyle’s directorial debut, The Legend Of Barney Thompson.

Carlyle’s film, in which he also stars, is described as a darkly comic thriller that also features Emma Thompson and Ray Winstone, and is based on Douglas’s Lindsay’s book series about a socially maladjusted hairdresser who decides to swap cutting locks for the life of a serial killer.

And that’s just the cinematic tip of the iceberg, part of a programme that will also include such wide-ranging and anticipated titles as Asif Kapadia’s documentary Amy, the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring zombie drama Maggie, James Marsden and Jack Black in comedy pic The D-Train, Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy and Last Days In The Desert, which stars Ewan McGregor.

The latter name from that list will be present for one of a series of In-Person events, with filmmakers interviewed about their work. Also showing up? Jane Seymour and Malcolm McDowell, Hong Kong director/producer Jonnie To, and Haskell Wexler, who will appear in Seamus McGarvey’s In Conversation series.

This year’s festival runs from June 17-28 and you can get more details, including how to attend, right here.
