Since the news broke that Simon Pegg would be taking over co-scripting duties on the third new Star Trek film – currently rumoured as Star Trek Beyond, but with no official confirmation on that – the man who is also Scotty in front of the camera has been talking about his plans. And that, according to Pegg, includes Idris Elba, who is in talks to play a villain.

Pegg is writing the new film with Doug Jung, and while he didn’t completely confirm Elba, he did say, “we’re trying to write him a kick-ass role!” which makes us think the deal is all but done.

Star Trek turns 50 next year and with the second Trek sequel since J.J. Abrams and co. rebooted the franchise in 2009, arriving right on time for that, Pegg and his co-writer intend to honour the legacy of the show. "It's an incredible show when you watch it, how little they had, these little thoughtful plays dealing with incredibly human and intellectual ideas", Pegg says. "Star Trek has to be something else now", he admitted. "Those people who decry it and say why isn't it like the show? It should be paper sets... It can't be that now. If we want Star Trek, it has to be a certain thing. But we can certainly invest in it the spirit of the show, and get back to the essence of what it is".

He’s previously talked up how he wants to get back into the exploration element of the show, with Kirk and the crew likely to finally, truly head where no one has gone before. With Justin Lin directing, the cast back on board plus a likely Elba and Kingsman’s Sofia Boutella, the new Trek is scheduled to dock with our cinemas on July 8, 2016.
