That nice Sam Mendes is spoiling us with a selection of Spectre DVD extras before the film has even been finished, let alone released in cinemas. The latest video blog deftly walks the line between taking us behind the scenes and giving away major plot points, like the possible presence (or otherwise) of Blofeld, double-taking pigeons and rocket-launching ghetto blasters. Click below to take a closer look at the Mexico City leg of the film’s shoot.
“I wanted the audience to be dropped right into the middle of a very, very specific, very heady, rich environment,” explains Mendes of the movie’s "biggest ever" opening sequence built around Mexico's Dia de Muertos holiday. "It’s the Day of the Dead, everywhere you look there’s colour and detail and life. We’ve built floats and maquettes, the costumes are extraordinary and the craftsmanship is amazing.”
Alongside Mendes, there are contributions from costume designer Jany Temime, producer Stacy Perskie and make-up designer Naomi Donne, among other key crew and more than 1500 extras. {New Spectre Vlog Pics}With Sam Mendes back directing a script that has been written by John Logan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, Spectre sees Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris, as M, Q and Moneypenny respectively, with new recruits Christoph Waltz as Oberhauser, Dave Bautista as Mr. Hinx, Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra, Lea Seydoux as Madeleine Swann, Stephanie Sigman as Estrella and Andrew Scott as Denbigh. Oh, and Daniel Craig as James Bond. It’ll hit UK screens on October 23 before heading to the States and elsewhere on November 6.

The director of the indomitable Jurassic World, Colin Trevorrow, stopped by the Empire Podcast booth recently to spill some T-Rex-sized beans about the box office record-breaking blockbuster, and here is the fascinating result. Topped up with near an hour of in-depth discussion from the podcast team, if you've already seen the movie, stop everything you're doing and get listening sharpish.
Way back in 2006, Christopher McQuarrie was announced as the writer and director of The Stanford Prison Experiment. Nine years later the film is finally complete, but in rather different form than originally planned. McQuarrie is now listed only among the producers, with the screenplay credit going to Tim Talbott (South Park, Medium), and Kyle Patrick Alvarez (C.O.G.) in the director's chair. Ezra Miller, Thomas Mann, Billy Crudup and Olivia Thirlby head up the cast, and here's a trailer.
The film, of course, is based on the infamous human behaviour study conducted in the early 1970s. The experiment saw a group of US college students taking on the roles of prisoners and guards to study the effects of incarceration. Within a day, the “guards” resorted to psychological torture and humiliation and the “prisoners” began to riot.
It’s been a cultural touchstone for years – and several films based on the subject have been grinding away in the Development Slammer for years. The most recent was Paul T. Scheuring's 2010 The Experiment, starring Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker, and itself a remake of Oliver Hirschbiegel's 2001 German film. The BBC also recreated the experiment for a documentary series in 2002.
A familiar story then, and we'll see in due course whether Alvarez and co. have come up with a markedly fresh take. The Stanford Prison Experiment plays on Thursday at the Edinburgh Film Festival, but we don't otherwise have a UK release date yet.
Olympus sequel won't be competing with The Martian after all
UPDATE: The game of release date musical chairs continues. Fighting terrorists is one thing for Gerard Butler's Mike Banning, but Ridley Scott is another matter entirely. With The Martian now invading the debut spot for Olympus Has Fallen sequel London Has Fallen, Gramercy Pictures have sounded a retreat. The action sequel will now open three months later than planned on January 22.
This now puts London Has Fallen -in the States at least - in direct competition with The Mechanic: Resurrection. It's Butler Vs. Statham! Who will survive, and what will be left of them?
Following the excitement generated by the amazing trailer, Fox has rejigged its release schedule to bring Ridley Scott's The Martian to cinemas two months earlier than previously anticipated. It'll now be out in the States on October 2, switching places with Victor Frankenstein, which has been shunted back to November 25.
This now means that The Martian occupies the same release slot that Gravity did in 2013: not a strategy that did too badly for Gravity, you might say. Matt Damon's red planet ordeal will have competition this year from London Has Fallen and Robert Zemeckis' The Walk. But it'll open well in advance of any sci-fi competition from that little J.J. Abrams movie, potentially giving it a longer run for its money.{First Look At The Martian}
The news isn't too bad for Victor Frankenstein either though, since November 25 is Thanksgiving weekend. James McAvoy (Frankenstein) and Daniel Radcliffe (Igor) will face off against The Good Dinosaur and Rocky spin-off-quel Creed.
What this means for the UK isn't quite clear at this point, but we'd imagine a similar date shift. If you're in need of anticipatory Martian information in the meantime, Empire's trailer breakdown will cater to all your needs.
