The Martian Survives At The Top Of The US Box Office

The Martian Survives At The Top Of The US Box Office

Pan lands badly in third

Despite at least one new wide competitor, The Martian had the right stuff to remain top of the box office charts in the US this weekend, holding off all the newcomers for a healthy $37 million over what is a lesser four-day weekend (Columbus Day), according to studio estimates.

That’s a drop of less than 32% from last weekend for Matt Damon and the rest of the crew, and the film has now made more than $227.8 million worldwide thanks to a healthy opening in Korea. Microwaved potatoes all round!

It was also a weekend of celebration for Hotel Transylvania 2, as the animated sequel took in a healthy $20.3 million for a $116.8 million total in the States – which is actually ahead of The Martian’s $108.7 US haul so far. But you can cancel the DJ and balloons for Pan, which didn’t so much soar as belly flop on arrival. The big fantasy film suffered from mixed reviews and earned just $15.5 million, which is not a promising start for a movie that cost $150 million to make before advertising and print costs. Warner Bros. will be hoping it performs better outside the States.

The Intern stayed where it was in fourth, making $8.6 million, ahead of Sicario, which fell from third to fifth with $7.3 million.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials was sixth with $5.2 million, and The Walk disappointed somewhat after opening in limited release in IMAX and other premium formats last week. Robert Zemeckis’ latest didn’t exactly need to conquer a fear of heights as it only made it to seventh with $3.6 million in wider release this weekend and $6.3 million so far. It’s another one that might be looking for some help from overseas cinemagoers. Black Mass was down to eighth and $3.1 million, while Everest dropped to ninth with $3 million. In 10th place we M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit, which earned $2.2 million, with its $63.5 million ($83.2 million worldwide so far) a fine return on that $5 million budget.
