Tonight's 2015 BFI London Film Festival gala is brought to in association with Empire, because we like to give you nice things. Or at least good-but-twisted things in Ben Wheatley’s hotly anticipated High-Rise, a darkly comic adaptation of J.G Ballard’s dystopian novel. Tom Hiddleston takes the lead as Dr Robert Laing, a recent transplant to the retro-futuristic world of the eponymous tower block, who quickly discovers barely-restrained violence lurking beneath the building’s Stepford veneer.
A swift descent into anarchy follows, observed from above by the building’s mysterious architect (Jeremy Irons), and his circle of high-class sycophants. Luke Evans is Wilder, the iconoclastic documentary maker leading the charge, and Sienna Miller brings gravitas to insouciant socialite Charlotte Melville, one floor above Laing.
Wheatley and Hiddleston were joined on the red carpet by most of the film’s incredible ensemble cast: James Purefoy, Sienna Guillory and Elisabeth Moss amongst them. {High-Rise LFF Gala}
While Hiddleston was distracted by requests for his best Jeremy Irons impersonation and an impressively long tangent on the subject of cake - “Love eating cake, I have no problem with eating cake… The thing is, I think eating cake is a genuine pleasure, so I don’t feel guilty about it. I’m very happy to eat as much cake as I choose, and I think people should eat more cake if they want.” - Empire grabbed Enzo Cilenti for a chat.
“I was really flattered they were even considering me for it,” he said of his role as Adrian Talbot, a wishy-washy psychiatrist. Clienti's wife [Guillory] was cast before him, “so I was privy to the screenplay before I even knew I was going to do it, and I was unbelievably jealous that she would get to do it. As a script, it was pretty mind-blowing, so I can only imagine what we’re going to see.”
He also offered up a short summary of director Wheatley’s next project, Free Fire, which he will again be appearing in. “A completely different thing… a load of dudes with guns.” Looking forward to it already, Enzo.
High-Rise also stars Keeley Hawes & Reece Shearsmith, and hits UK cinemas in March 2016.
