The news has only broken over the last few weeks, but already there's a film in the works about the cloud of scandal surrounding the emission-testing cheating at Volkswagen. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson, through their Appian Way production banner, have come aboard to produce Paramount's film, based on the forthcoming book by Jack Ewing.
Ewing is a writer for the International New York Times and the author of the snappily titled Germany's Economic Renaissance. Publishers Norton snapped up his pitch for a book on the VW saga for a reported six figures. The movie deal can't have hurt his coffers either.
Which is in stark contrast to the situation at Volkswagen. If you've missed the story so far, the car manufacturers were rumbled for their policy of cheating the emissions tests for their "clean diesel" cars using "defeat device" software that would meet the required European standards when the car was being tested. Out on the road in normal circumstances, the cars were producing 40% more pollution than was allowed by law. VW's share prices plunged in reaction to the revelations, and CEO Martin Winterkorn was forced to resign.
Ewing's book doesn't exist yet, so clearly neither does the screenplay based on it. The film is obviously some way off then, with no writers, directors or cast attached so far.
DiCaprio himself drives a Toyota Prius and an electric Fisker Karma (not at the same time). We'll forgo the joke about his personal emissions.
