We already knew it wasn't happening, so this is really only an addendum to the previous story. But if you needed any more evidence that Guillermo Del Toro's sequel to Pacific Rim had been back-burnered by studios Legendary and Universal, it's now been officially hiked from the release schedules. It certainly won't now be out on August 4, 2017.
Universal's position remains that Pacific Rim 2 isn't dead yet, but "indefinitely delayed". In a statement, the studio clarified that the unspecified extra time will be used to make the film "the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves".
Universal have stuck Pitch Perfect 3 in its place. The a cappella comedy now arrives a month later than previously planned, but has its new date entirely to itself.
“As far as I’m concerned, Pacific Rim 2 is not cancelled, just postponed,” Del Toro tells Variety. “Right now, we have to put a budget and screenplay together, present it to Universal and Legendary, and they will make a decision.” He says his next film will now be a small indie that he's keeping secret for now.
In the meantime, however, there's Del Toro's gothic romance Crimson Peak, starring Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain. That one's out in the UK on October 16.
