Big of budget but disappointing of box office, Edge Of Tomorrow seems an unlikely candidate for a sequel, even in these franchise-happy times. Tom Cruise, however, is still chewing over ways and means of making it happen. Talking to MTV News at the premiere of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, he hinted that the property may yet live again.
“I pitched it to [Christopher] McQuarrie and Doug [Liman]," he revealed of his idea for a sequel. "We were there one night and I was like, 'I’ve got an idea for it'."
McQuarrie, of course, is Cruise's screenwriter of choice and the man who adapted the Manga property All You Need Is Kill into a pulsing, pacy sci-fi actioner in which Cruise and Emily Blunt tooled up to tackle a species of grabastic extra-terrestrial killing machines. Liman directed the movie and is reconnecting with his star for crime biopic Mena.
Should it come to pass, Cruise is keen to see his co-star return. “It could be so much fun. Gotta get Emily," he said. "I was like 'Emily, please'. She was like, ’Give me another year, please'."
Maybe not so far-fetched, then. The next question is what the heck to call it...

Set in 1813, Taboo follows James Keziah Delaney (Hardy), a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a dangerous game with two warring nations, Britain and America.
“This man, James Delaney, is a deeply flawed and deeply troubled human being. His greatest struggle will be against the East India Company which, throughout the nineteenth century, was the equivalent of the CIA, the NSA and the biggest, baddest multi-national corporation on earth, all rolled into one self righteous, religiously motivated monolith,” is how Steven Knight views his new antihero.
Based on an idea by Hardy and his father Chips, and created by Knight, Taboo is being produced by Ridley Scott's Scott Free company and Hardy's own Hardy Son & Baker, for the BBC and FX. Shooting starts in November for transmission in 2016.

Let's not beat around the bush: True Detective's second season has not lived up to the quality of the first. Suffering from a myriad of problems, including poor dialogue, too many freeway shots, a boring central plot, and less-than-intriguing characters, Season 2 has been widely criticized by
Though it sounds like some sort of epic space opera, it’s actually rooted in the real-life story of Michael German, an FBI agent who spent years undercover in neo-Nazi and militia groups in the States. In the film, the character based on German will be similarly embedded, trying to stop a bunch of chaos-happy white supremacists constructing a dirty bomb.
Daniel Ragussis, who has been making short films, is jumping to features with this thriller, which he co-wrote with German. All being well, the cameras should be rolling this autumn. It’s another job for the ever-busy Radcliffe, who is currently shooting surreal indie pic Swiss Army Man alongside Paul Dano and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. He has Victor Frankenstein due out on November 27, while Now You See Me: The Second Act follows on June 10 next year. And there’s also Game Changer, about the legal battle over the violent and sexual content of the Grand Theft Auto game series, which will screen on BBC Two next year.

Having just scored a slot at the Toronto International Film Festival, anticipated drama Room has brought its first trailer online, boasting the promise of another great performance from Brie Larson.
Room is based on the 2010 novel by Emma Donoghue, which is itself based loosely on the real life case of Elisabeth Fritzl. Fritzl was imprisoned in a secret basement space by her appalling father Josef for 24 years, bearing him several children which he explained as foundlings. She was discovered in 2008, and her father was jailed for life in 2009.
In Donoghue's Booker-shortlisted version, this becomes the story of Ma, seven years a prisoner with a son called Jack, who is also the novel's narrator. Their captor remains offstage, given little attention, since the focus is Jack's world view, having never known anything but the small space in which he lives. The writer herself adapted the script, and the film was directed by Frank’s Lenny Abrahamson.
Larson and her son (played by Jacob Tremblay) are definitely the focus here, and while the trailer – spoiler alert – gives away the fact that, as in the real-life situation they are eventually freed, that’s far from the end of the story, as Ma and Jack must deal with the tough reality beyond their walls and skylight.
Room will arrive in the US in limited release on October 16, before going wider on November 6. There are no details on a UK date yet, but given that Film4 was involved in getting it made, we’d hope to hear something soon.
Come with us on a journey to meet a young man named Harry Potter, who must stop a diabolical evil from… No, wait! It’s not a new story set in J.K. Rowling’s world, as the new project’s lawyers are at pains to point out. It’s actually an animated follow-up to 1986 oddity Troll, and Patricia Arquette is the first person to be announced as part of the voice cast.
Yes, despite the fact that it was critically mauled upon release, Troll – which saw the titular creature invade a San Francisco apartment on the hunt for a magical ring that can turn him back into human form – has become something of a cult curio, if not exactly a hit.
Now the original film’s director, John Carl Buechler is involved in the new film, known as Troll: The Rise Of Harry Potter, Jr., which finds the young hero – voiced here by newcomer Baxter Barlett, taking over the role from Noah Hathaway – revisiting the magical world he experienced the first time, and reaching out to a witch (Arquette) for help against a troll wizard and his plans to take over the planet.
Yes, the Harry Potter who appeared on film (he’s Harry Potter, Jr., which means his father, Harry Potter, Sr. also predates Rowling’s work) hit screens 11 years before Hogwarts opened for business. Still, the people working on the new ‘toon, which is aiming for a 2017 release date, are making absolutely sure that there can be no confusion, with some handy legal boilerplate: “Troll: The Rise Of Harry Potter, Jr. has not been prepared, approved or licensed by any entity that created or produced the J.K Rowling series of Harry Potter books or the Warner Bros. series of Harry Potter motion pictures. Troll: The Movie LLC is not affiliated with J.K. Rowling or Warner Bros nor has this motion picture been endorsed or authorized by J.K. Rowling or Warner Bros. The characters Harry Potter and Harry Potter, Jr. depicted in Troll are not related to, or inspired by, the book and film characters of J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros.” So now you know.
