Russell Crowe On For Survival Tale In Sand And Blood

Russell Crowe On For Survival Tale In Sand And Blood

He'll need his wits for a new, based-on-truth tale

Russell-Crowe-In-Sand-And-Blood

Stories of survival against great odds are big at the moment – look at Unbroken or this week’s The Martian. Russell Crowe is attached to a new film that hews more towards the former, a true tale of shipwreck, slavery and smart thinking called In Sand And Blood.

Ronan Bennett has written the script, which follows the story of the ill-fated crew of an American ship in 185. Wrecked on the coast of the Western Sahara, the starving, dehydrated men were captured, beaten and slaved by locals, kept alive with camel blood and urine. Five died, and the rest were sold on to a succession of tribesmen, who bartered their lives for sometimes as little as a blanket.

But when Captain James Riley (Crowe, assuming he’s made a deal) is sold to an Arab Trader named Sidi Hamet, the sailor somehow convinced him that he would sell for a better price to a European consul supposedly based in a Moroccan port a thousand miles north. The official was all in Riley’s mind, but it was a daring plan to that led to a fateful trek across harsh terrain.

While his participation in the film hasn’t been officially confirmed, The Wrap has dug in and found details, most notably a tweet from Crowe that shows him researching the role, though hopefully he's saving the whole "drinking camel blood and urine" for the film's effects whizzes to create, or else those animals are going to be awfully surprised.

The actor will next be seen in Fathers And Daughters, due here on November 13. He also has Shane Black’s The Nice Guys arriving on June 3 next year.

Mathieu Amalric Joins The Body Artist

Mathieu Amalric Joins The Body Artist

Benoît Jacquot adapting Don DeLillo's novel

Back in 2013, a film was announced of Don DeLillo's novel The Body Artist. Luca Guadagnino was set to direct a cast including Isabelle Huppert, Denis Lavant, Sigourney Weaver and David Cronenberg in one of his rare acting roles. Sadly that project never came to fruition, but the novel is now on its way back to the screen in a new form. Benoît Jacquot is now the director, and Mathieu Amalric and Jeanne Balibar are set to star.

The Body Artist - a slim 2001 novella following DeLillo's colossal 1997 Underworld - is often described as a ghost story, but is really not quite that. A meditation on perception, time and grief, the book features long passages in which characters make breakfast or stare at webcam footage of empty roads in Finland. It does, however, involve the enigmatic appearance of a young man in an apartment, who may or may not be real. Said mystery figure arrives in the life of Lauren Hartke, after the sudden suicide of her husband.

The body art of the film's title refers to the avant-garde physical performances Lauren practices; no tattoos here. Interestingly, the cast as announced for the previous version was beginning to look more extensive than the actual dramatis personae of the novel, indicating some sort of expansion for the screen. The extent to which this iteration is the same project remains to be seen, but it retains producer Paolo Branco, who was also behind Cronenberg's own DeLillo movie Cosmopolis.

Pre-production on The Body Artist (AKA Son Corps) is underway, with shooting set to start in November in Portugal. It's expected for release sometime next year. DeLillo's novel is published in the UK by Picador.

Pacific Rim Sequel Pulled From Schedules

Pacific Rim Sequel Pulled From Schedules

But the official line is it's only delayed

We already knew it wasn't happening, so this is really only an addendum to the previous story. But if you needed any more evidence that Guillermo Del Toro's sequel to Pacific Rim had been back-burnered by studios Legendary and Universal, it's now been officially hiked from the release schedules. It certainly won't now be out on August 4, 2017.

Universal's position remains that Pacific Rim 2 isn't dead yet, but "indefinitely delayed". In a statement, the studio clarified that the unspecified extra time will be used to make the film "the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves".

Universal have stuck Pitch Perfect 3 in its place. The a cappella comedy now arrives a month later than previously planned, but has its new date entirely to itself.

“As far as I’m concerned, Pacific Rim 2 is not cancelled, just postponed,” Del Toro tells Variety. “Right now, we have to put a budget and screenplay together, present it to Universal and Legendary, and they will make a decision.” He says his next film will now be a small indie that he's keeping secret for now.

In the meantime, however, there's Del Toro's gothic romance Crimson Peak, starring Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain. That one's out in the UK on October 16.
