Ridley Scott Offers More Blade Runner 2 Details

Ridley Scott Offers More Blade Runner 2 Details

''We’ve been working on it for a couple of years...''

Ridley-Scott-More-Blade-Runner-2-details

Another day, another interview with Sir Ridley Scott. Out and about talking up The Martian, Scott has been dropping word on his future films like an ovipositor implants alien eggs. But chatting with Yahoo, he’s focused more on long-gestating sequel Blade Runner 2, which like his plans for Prometheus, may extend further than first thought.

Asked when the film will be set, Scott offers bluntly, “It was 2017, so coming back it’ll be 2047, roughly,” while adding praise for Ryan Gosling, who will co-star with Harrison Ford and carry the franchise going forward. “As young as you can play Ryan Gosling. He’s 34, but he looks 27 when he’s doing his push-ups. So maybe 2050.”

And what of that idea that Gosling is in place so that more films can be made after this one? “Listen: Everyone else is, so why not? I love to work,” explains Scott. “The French say, ‘Work to live, and I live to work. I’m very lucky to have a job that I adore. Some of it’s trying, but it’s like being in professional sport. It’s so competitive [that] you better keep bouncing the ball. You can’t rest."

He will, however, be handing the new Blade Runner over to Prisoners/Sicario director Denis Villeneuve. From the sounds of it, though, Scott will still very much be in control. “I mean, I always have final cut on everything, really. Partly because I’m very user-friendly. I always believe when you’re given X amount of money by someone to f**k around with and make a movie, you can’t draw lines in the sand. If I was an investor and you did that to me, I’d remove your ankles. So don’t do the auteur s**t. I respect the guy for giving the money and I respect the studio for saying, ‘Yeah, you want to do this, here we go.’”

And part of that responsibility is having Ford back for the sequel despite the actor’s previous opposition. “I got Harrison back. Because Harrison said, ‘Meh,’ and I said, ‘No, read this.’ And I think he said, ‘This is the best script I’ve ever had,’" Scott says, referring to the script that has seen work from Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. “We’ve been working on it for a couple of years.”

The plan for this one is for Ford’s Deckard to be – spoiler alert in case you haven’t seen Blade Runner – embracing his Replicant side. “Of course he’s a bloody Replicant! He’s going to have to admit it.” Which does make us wonder how he can stay alive when the replicants in the original had a built-in limited lifespan. “You’ll have to see the story. It’ll all make sense.”

The Martian arrives in the UK today and hits US screens on October 2. For more from Scott, check out our chat with him about Alien: Paradise Lost and keep an ear open for the next Empire Podcast for a full interview with the man, which will be online Friday.

Reese Witherspoon Adapting In A Dark, Dark Wood

Reese Witherspoon Adapting In A Dark, Dark Wood

She will produce and may star in the film based on the novel

Reese-Witherspoon-Dark-Dark-Wood

Adding to her lengthy list of projects she has in development as a producer, Reese Witherspoon has targeted Ruth Ware’s mystery novel In A Dark, Dark Wood as a likely movie

New Line has nabbed the rights to the film, which Witherspoon will produce with business partner Bruna Papandrea under their Pacific Standard company. Already a bestseller, Ware’s book follows reclusive crime writer Leonora, who is usually found working away in her apartment. She’s persuaded to leave the comfortable climes of her home by an invite to a hen night party in an eerie glass house deep in the countryside from a school friend she hasn’t seen in years. But when she wakes up 48 hours later injured but alive in a hospital bed, there is a mystery more puzzling than even the stories she writes to be solved. And more worryingly for her, she’s at the centre of it.

The next step will be to find a writer to adapt the script and decide whether she’ll star or stay as producer. Among the other projects she has on the go are supernatural thriller Cold, Ashley’s War, All Is Not Forgotten, Pale Blue Dot and a live-action take on Peter Pan character Tinkerbell in Tink.

Mel Gibson's new war drama starts filming

Hacksaw-Ridge-First-Image

With his cast and crew in place, Mel Gibson is now rolling the cameras on his new directorial effort, returning to the wartime milieu that has served him well in the past. The first image from Hacksaw Ridge is now online and can be seen above, courtesy of The Wrap.

With a script from Gibson’s old collaborator Randall Wallace, Hacksaw Ridge is based on the true story of Desmond T. Doss, who served as a US Army medic in World War II during the battle of Okinawa and refused to kill. Despite his objections, his incredible valour saving lives during the battle saw him awarded the Medal of Honor, the first time a conscientious objector has won the decoration.

Garfield is playing Doss, with Vaughn as Sergeant Howell, the man whose job it is to get raw recruits ready for combat, Sam Worthington as Captain Glover, in charge of the unit and Luke Bracey is Smitty Ryker, the tough alpha of the platoon. Teresa Palmer will be Doss’ true love Dorothy Shutte, with Rachel Griffiths as his mother, Bertha. There’s no release date yet, but the film should report to cinemas next year.

Russell Crowe Starring On For Survival Tale In Sand And Blood

Russell Crowe Starring On For Survival Tale In Sand And Blood

He'll needs his wits for a new, based-on-truth tale

Russell-Crowe-In-Sand-And-Blood

Stories of survival against great odds are big at the moment – look at Unbroken or this week’s The Martian. Russell Crowe is attached to a new film that hews more towards the former, a true tale of shipwreck, slavery and smart thinking called In Sand And Blood.

Ronan Bennett has written the script, which follows the story of the ill-fated crew of an American ship in 185. Wrecked on the coast of the Western Sahara, the starving, dehydrated men were captured, beaten and slaved by locals, kept alive with camel blood and urine. Five died, and the rest were sold on to a succession of tribesmen, who bartered their lives for sometimes as little as a blanket.

But when Captain James Riley (Crowe, assuming he’s made a deal) is sold to an Arab Trader named Sidi Hamet, the sailor somehow convinced him that he would sell for a better price to a European consul supposedly based in a Moroccan port a thousand miles north. The official was all in Riley’s mind, but it was a daring plan to that led to a fateful trek across harsh terrain.

While his participation in the film hasn’t been officially confirmed, The Wrap has dug in and found details, most notably a tweet from Crowe that shows him researching the role, though hopefully he's saving the whole "drinking camel blood and urine" for the film's effects whizzes to create, or else those animals are going to be awfully surprised.

The actor will next be seen in Fathers And Daughters, due here on November 13. He also has Shane Black’s The Nice Guys arriving on June 3 next year.
