Sarah Chalke Joins Mother's Day

Sarah Chalke Joins Mother's Day

She'll be part of the ensemble comedy

Sarah-Chalke-Mothers-day

With Garry Marshall making another of his holiday-themed ensemble comedy dramas, we are beginning to wonder whether he’s secretly building to some huge crossover event where the casts of Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve and now Mother’s Day must join forces to stave off the Apocalypse. Still, that’s for the future (and our warped imaginations), so for now, he’s simply added Sarah Chalke to Mother’s Day.

The actress, best known for US comedy Scrubs, is joining a cast that already incudes Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Jason Sudeikis, Timothy Olyphant, Margo Martindale, Shay Mitchell, Britt Robertson, Jack Whitehall, Aasif Mandvi, Ella Anderson and Loni Love. She’ll be Gabi, who is figuring out how to raise her son with partner Max (Cameron Esposito).

In keeping with the other movies, it’ll be another anthology pack of stories about people dealing with the titular holiday and life in general. Tom Hines, Lily Hollander and Anya Kochoff have combined their forces to write this one, with Marshall rolling the cameras now in Atlanta. The film will be out in the States on April 29 next year, all the better to get out ahead of the actual US holiday date, which is May 8 in 2016. There’s no sign yet on a UK release.

John Hyams Directing New Maniac Cop

John Hyams Directing New Maniac Cop

With Nicolas Winding Refn as executive producer

John-Hyams-Maniac-Cop-Remake

Back in 2012, Nicolas Winding Refn let word slip that he’s overseeing what will either be a remake or a new chapter in the Maniac Cop franchise which most people had, not without cause, written off as finished. After three years of silence, we know who will be tackling the job: director John Hyams and writer Ed Brubaker.

The gleefully scuzzy Maniac Cop series, just in case you were unaware, belongs to the Larry Cohen school of genre exploitation, and is about an undead police officer on a killing spree (three of them, ultimately). The 1988 original stars two famous chins in Bruce Campbell and Robert Z'Dar. Z'dar continued on his maniacal path through both sequels; Robert Davi did the investigating in the second and third instalments; and part three (Badge Of Silence) has Jackie Earl Haley in it. All three were produced by Cohen and directed by William Lustig (with some co-directing assistance on the third from Joel Soisson).

News of the fresh development arrived at Fantastic Fest in Austin, with Twitch picking up the word from Hyams, the man behind recent Universal Soldier sequels Regeneration and Day Of Reckoning. It certainly seems like Refn has the right sort of team in place, with the big question being whether anyone can be found to replicate the Maniac Cop himself, Z’Dar, for the new movie.

Hitchcock/Truffaut Trailer Online

Hitchcock/Truffaut Trailer Online

Filmmakers on filmmaking

Truffaut-Hitchcock-trailer

Back in 1962, Alfred Hitchcock and Francois Truffaut shut themselves away in a room for a week to discuss films, filmmaking and Hitch’s oeuvre in particular. The results were published in a book called, not-too-surprisingly, Hitchcock/Truffaut, and now the conversations are the basis for a fascinating new documentary that has a trailer up at Apple.

Director/writer Kent Jones and co-writer Serge Toubiana have rounded up living master class in directing to discuss more about Hitchcock’s style, skill and body of work. The likes of Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Olivier Assayas, Peter Bogdanovich, Arnaud Desplechin, James Gray, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Richard Linklater, Paul Schrader and more bring their own unique insights to Hitch’s movies and the impact they had on cinema, even as we also get to hear recordings of the two original directors in discussion.

Hitchcock/Truffaut played to great acclaim at the Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals and promises to serve as a lecture series on how some of cinema’s best films have come about through the eyes of people who know what they’re talking about. The film will be out in the US on December 2, and before that will screen as part of the London Film Festival on October 10 and 18, though both showings are currently sold out.
