Sigourney Weaver Cameoing In Paul Feig's Ghostbusters

Sigourney Weaver Cameoing In Paul Feig's Ghostbusters

She's the latest of the original cast revealed

Sigourney-Weaver-Ghostbusters

With shooting now wrapped on his version of Ghostbusters, you might think that Paul Feig wouldn’t have to worry about leaks from the set. But after the likes of Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd’s cameos got out, he’s had to get ahead of one last info-spill, announcing on Twitter that Sigourney Weaver will also show up in some capacity.

Nothing is known about who she’ll be playing in the film – we doubt it’ll be Dana Barrett, since Feig’s film, written with Katie Dippold, spins a different story about the creation of a ghostbusting team – but it’s nice to know that the surviving original leads will all turn up in some capacity, with Ernie Hudson having dropped in on the last day of shooting. Of course, with the Gatekeeper showing up, it sets us hoping that the Keymaster – AKA Rick Moranis (who played Louis Tully in both original films) might have made an appearance, but we’ll have to be patient and see if Feig has been sneaky enough to get him in there.

Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon star as the women who must defend New York against a surge in paranormal activity, with Chris Hemsworth, Michael Kenneth Williams, Andy Garcia, Matt Walsh and Neil Casey also all aboard. Feig’s latest will be out on July 15.

Weaver, who was last seen in Chappie, will appear in Juan Antonio Bayona’s A Monster Calls and is attached to James Cameron’s expansive Avatar sequels. She also will likely play Ripley for Neil Blomkamp’s gestating new Alien film, which Ridley Scott addressed recently while talking about Prometheus sequel Alien: Paradise Lost

First Teaser For Marvel's Jessica Jones

First Teaser For Marvel's Jessica Jones

Don't be alarmed

Following on from the first official pictures of the heroine and her various associates and enemies, we now have actual, moving footage of Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones. Well… Her arm, at least. A funny first teaser for the new show from Marvel and Netflix has hit the web. Alarm clocks everywhere… beware!

Ritter stars as the titular heroine, a woman with super-strength and advanced healing powers who was once a superhero, but after a traumatic experience, gave that up and is now making a living as a private eye whose cases often bring her into contact with those similarly boasting special abilities as well as the usual: cheating spouses, small crimes and missing relatives.

Overseen by Melissa Rosenberg and based on Brian Michael Bendis’ Alias comic book series, the show will also feature Rachael Taylor as Jessica’s closest friend Patricia “Trish” Walker, Mike Colter as friend and sometime love interest Luke “Power Man” Cage (who will be starring in his own series, now shooting), Carrie-Ann Moss as the enigmatic Harper and David Tennant as Zebediah Kilgrave, The Purple Man, a psychic psychopath who has caused so much trouble for Jessica in the past and looks set to continue to do so in the present.

As you can see from the teaser, Jessica doesn’t really do mornings, and she’s not best pleased at being woken up. But she’ll be a little more active for the series, which drops in its entirety on Netflix on November 20. It’s part of the Defenders set of shows, which also includes Daredevil, back next year for a second season.

Hotel Transylvania 2 Bites Into The US Box Office

Hotel Transylvania 2 Bites Into The US Box Office

Toon sequel tops The Intern

Hotel-Transylvania-2-Bites-US-Box-Office

After suffering a run of weak earnings for his live-action offerings, Adam Sandler must be counting his blessings for the Hotel Transylvania franchise, with the second film opening stronger than the first and snatching the September opening record from its fangs with $47.5 million, according to studio estimates.

The new movie, fuelled by demand for family fare, proved to be a winner with audiences as it landed an A- minus from those polled. It also managed to win the best opening for a Sony Pictures Animation release. That sound you hear is executives scrambling to lock actors into details and brainstorming ideas for a third film.

Nancy Meyers also saw a healthy return for her efforts, with Anne Hathaway/Robert De Niro comedy drama The Intern arriving in second place with $18.2 million. Targeting generally older audiences, it’s a solid opening, if not her best launch – that would be What Women Want back in 2000. But this is still good news considering that her target audience doesn’t usually show up in big numbers for opening weekends. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials was pushed from last week’s top spot to third, earning an additional $14 million. Everest, which had hoped to scale the heights after a launch last week in IMAX and other premium formats, only saw a jump of one place for $13 million and $23.1 million so far. Johnny Depp gangster drama Black Mass rounded out the top five with $11.5 million.

M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit slipped from third to sixth, earning $6.7 million, but with $52.2 million in the bank so far, it’s already in profit given the film’s $5 million budget. Stalker thriller The Perfect Guy fell to seventh with $4.7 million while faith-based drama War Room was down to eighth and $4.2 million. Arriving in fewer cinemas than most of its competition and relying on non-traditional advertising doesn’t really seemed to have helped Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno, which has been sitting in release limbo for a while. The horror made $3.4 million its first weekend for a ninth-place launch. Finally, we have drug war thriller Sicario, which is riding a lot of praise but taking a slow-burn, platform release strategy. Playing on just 59 screens, the movie still managed to earn $1.7 million for $2.3 million to date, and it’ll be interesting to see if it gets a further boost from awards chatter.

To see Dracula and co. put the bite on the rest of the crowd in the full chart listings, head to Box Office Mojo.

Morten Tyldum Finds Mystery With And Then There Were None

Morten Tyldum Finds Mystery With And Then There Were None

Eric Heisserer will adapt the Agatha Christie novel

Morten-Tyldum-Christie-Adaptation

Agatha Christie is one of those authors whose work is always being adapted in some fashion or other. And 20th Century Fox is now the home for a long-in-the-making deal to turn her book And Then There Were None into a film. The Intimidation Game’s Morten Tyldum is aboard to call the shots. And probably the stabs

The Thing’s Eric Heisserer will work on the script after he and Tyldum helped Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps company come up with a pitch that won the Christie estate over after years of the team trying to score the rights. Christie’s book sees 10 strangers lured to Soldier Island for different reasons, only to discover that they were gathered by false pretences. Turns out they’re all guilty of different crimes, but got away with the deeds, and now someone has decided to start meting out some vigilante justice by bumping them off. And to make matters worse, they learn that it’s one of the 10…

This one will simmer in development for a while as Tyldum is currently busy getting ready to shoot long-gestating sci-fi script Passengers, which stars Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Sheen and Laurence Fishburne. Heisserer, meanwhile, worked on the script for horror film Lights Out and sci-fi short story adaptation Story Of Your Life

Christina Hendricks Joins Fist Fight

Christina Hendricks Joins Fist Fight

She'll be part of the Ice Cube/Charlie Day comedy

Christina-Hendricks-Fist-Fight

With Mad Men now a part of televisual history, Christina Hendricks has more time to take film roles. She’s now in negotiations to join high school-set comedy Fist Fight.

The New Line comedy has a script from Van Robichaux and Evan Susser, and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Richie Keen directing. The basic concept finds Day as a mild-mannered English teacher who must man up when a colleague (Cube) at his less-than-top-notch school who thinks he’s trying to get him fired challenges him to a good old-fashioned punch-up. Keen will start the cameras rolling next month in Atlanta.

Hendricks will be an intense drama teacher who has the hots for Cube, so come up with the steam jokes on your own time. She joins a cast that also includes Dean Norris, Jillian Bell and Tracy Morgan, who is returning to acting after a serious road accident. In addition to the new comedy, Hendricks has reunited with her Drive director, Nicolas Winding Refn for The Neon Demon. She was also originally part of Cameron Crowe’s new TV pilot, Roadies, but has since been replaced by Carla Gugino after the character was changed. Still, she won’t be away from small screens for too long, as she’s joined the cast of Hap And Leonard opposite James Purefoy and Michael Kenneth Williams.

John Goodman Boards Kong: Skull Island

John Goodman Boards Kong: Skull Island

Thomas Mann also joins the adventure

John-Goodman-Kong-Skull-Island

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has found two more hardy souls willing to venture into dangerous territory for Kong: Skull Island. John Goodman and Me And Earl And The Dying Girl’s Thomas Mann have joined the cast of the adventure film.

Kong, as you’ll likely know by now, finds a group of explorers – including the confirmed Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell and the slightly more nebulous, but likely to show up Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly – heading to the titular island and encountering the equally titular giant ape. Goodman, according to Deadline, is playing a government official named Randa who leads the expedition. Variety brings news of Mann’s casting, but only mentions that he’ll be part of the team.

With Vogt-Roberts aiming to shoot this autumn from a script that has seen work by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy and Derek Connolly, the film itself is set for a March 10, 2017 release in the UK and US. Originally set up by Legendary Pictures at current partner Universal, the movie recently shifted back to the production company’s old home Warner Bros., with Legendary hoping to spark a franchise that would eventually see Kong square off against Godzilla. We don’t like the ape’s chances on that match-up…

Goodman will next show up in Christmas With The Coopers, arriving on December 4. He follows that with Trumbo, which stars Bryan Cranston and arrives here on January 22. Mann has worked on several films without assigned UK release dates including Amityville: The Awakening and The Stanford Prison Experiment. He most recently shot Brain On Fire opposite Chloe Grace Moretz.
