Blue Ruin's Jeremy Saulnier Finds Hold the Dark

Blue Ruin's Jeremy Saulnier Finds Hold the Dark

He's adapting the wilderness revenge novel

Jeremy-Saulnier-Hold-The-Dark

He received acclaim for his directorial debut, 2013’s Blue Ruin. And he’s currently scooping in the plaudits for his follow-up, the Patrick Stewart-starring Green Room. So we’re glad to see director Jeremy Saulnier locking in his next project, an adaptation of Hold The Dark

Macon Blair, who appeared in both of Saulnier’s previous films, is writing this one (and will probably step in front of the camera once the production starts), adapting William Giraldi’s novel. It’s an intense story of revenge set against the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness. When a pack of wolves snatches a young child, an expert hunter is summoned to find a destroy the animals. But as he ventures into the harsh landscape, the mission becomes a personal echo of his own failures as a family man, and with the child’s grief-stricken father closing in behind and the lethal animals lurking ahead, he begins to question who the hunter really is.

Production company A24 (which helped bring Green Room to life) is on board once again, but there’s no word on when Saulnier will be working on the film. There’s some small part of us that hopes he and Blair call this new baby Red In Tooth And Claw just to keep the colour theme of their previous collaborations going. But we’re weird like that.

While Green Room doesn’t have a UK release date locked down yet, it will screen at the London Film Festival on October 14.

Men In Black Reboot Moving Forward As A New Trilogy

Men In Black Reboot Moving Forward As A New Trilogy

But no Will Smith as of now

Men-In-Black-Reboot

There have been several stories about the future of the Men In Black franchise in the past couple of years, most notably the idea that it’ll crossover with the Jump Street team. But now, buried within an interview with producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald is mention that they’re working on a new trilogy, not just a new film

“We’re in the middle of it, it’s very active” Parkes tells The Hollywood Reporter, with MacDonald adding “It will be reinvented as a trilogy.” So far, so pretty much standard for Hollywood these days. But that’s not all.  According to Parkes, Will Smith, surely the franchise’s most recognizable element so far, is not currently a part of it.

No mention is made of the potential Jump Street crossover, but it certainly sounds like the production pair is looking to start things afresh. We wouldn’t be surprised if a new duo of primary agents is launched investigating all things extraterrestrial before any links to other franchises are considered, but like Parkes says, they’re still developing it. We also wouldn’t rule out a Smith cameo, though losing him as the lead would probably allow the budget to be spent on other things.

As for the producers’ main reason for giving the interview, the Malala Yousafzai documentary He Named Me Malala is out in the UK on November 6 and has a new trailer, which you can see here.

Sarah Silverman On For The Book Of Henry

Sarah Silverman On For The Book Of Henry

Lee Pace and Dean Norris also starring in Colin Trevorrow's latest

Sarah-Silverman-Book-Of-Henry

With Naomi Watts, Jaeden Lieberher and Jacob Tremblay already booked in to star, Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow is adding to the cast of his next film, The Book Of Henry. Sarah Silverman, Lee Pace and Dean Norris are all now aboard

Unlike his dino-centric franchise hit, Trevorrow is keeping things small and decidedly quiet with Henry, which was written by novelist Gregg Hurwitz. Nothing is known about the plot of the film, which isn’t adapted from anything and has a shoot starting soon in New York. “Book Of Henry is a remarkable piece of screenwriting that has stuck with me for years,” Trevorrow has said of the screenplay. “I feel very fortunate to be able to tell this story. It is a true original.”

Silverman has been working steadily on film recently, including the upcoming I Smile Back and the Lonely Island comedy music Connor4Real. Pace, last seen in Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, has Lance Armstrong drama The Program due on October 16. Breaking Bad veteran Norris, meanwhile, most recently worked on Secret In Their Eyes with Julia Roberts and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and the remake is out here on March 4 next year.

And Trevorrow, who will segue from shooting Henry to actively developing Star Wars: Episode IX, has seen one of his earlier scripts spring back to life. Stealing Time, which finds a scientist building a time machine and then into the past to protect it from criminals, forcing his son and grandson to figure out how to make another to save him, has been pulled from the archives of turnaround by Steven Spielberg and his DreamWorks team. Originally set up at Sony, the screenplay will now receive a new draft courtesy of Pixels co-writer Tim Dowling.

Rachel Weisz Knows My Cousin Rachel

Rachel Weisz Knows My Cousin Rachel

She's considering starring in the noir remake

Rachel-Weisz-My-Cousin-Rachel

Back in 1952, 20th Century Fox released My Cousin Rachel, a noir mystery starring Richard Burton and Olivia de Havilland. Now Fox Searchlight is putting a remake together, with Roger Michell on board to direct and Rachel Weisz in early talks to star

The original film, which Michell will also adapt, takes its story from Daphne du Maurier’s novel about Philip, an orphan who is used to living a happy life with his cousin and guardian, Ambrose. But when Ambrose is off on one of his health-related holidays, he reports back that he has fallen for Rachel, a distant relation, the tone of his letters starts to change and Philip decides to go and investigate. Yet he underestimates the power the beautiful Rachel will have over him.

According to Variety, the plan is for Weisz to work on the film after she finishes Denial, which has Tom Wilkinson in place to co-star. Mick Jackson is directing that drama, based on a script by David Ayer that sees a professor entering a legal battle with an outspoken holocaust denier.

Weisz will next appear in Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster, which is out on October 16. She’ll also show up in The Light Between Oceans, due on January 8.

Steven Soderbergh Plans Mosaic For HBO Films

Steven Soderbergh Plans Mosaic For HBO Films

Sharon Stone starring in a mystery TV experiment

Steven-Soderbergh-Mosiac

Never happier than when he’s tinkering with some facet of media, and continuing his growing relationship with television, Steven Soderbergh is cooking up something ambitious for HBO, with Sharon Stone signed on to star in Mosaic.

The director has been keeping the project under wraps for a while now, but Entertainment Weekly has been doing some digging. While Soderbergh is looking to kick off shooting soon with Stone and potentially Garrett Hedlund in the cast, the more intriguing part of the project is the bit he’s staying schtum about: it may involve multiple endings or even several plot stands that viewers will be able to control with an app. Nothing has been confirmed, but Soderbergh did finally release a statement about the fast-developing idea. “I believe the good people at HBO are genuinely enthusiastic about Mosaic for two reasons: First, it represents a fresh way of experiencing a story and sharing that experience with others; second, it will require a new Emmy category, and we will be the only eligible nominee.”

More will eventually come out about this one, and it’s going to be interesting to see where it goes and whether anyone was right about it. Soderbergh’s other main TV interest, The Knick, returns to US screens on October 16, with Sky likely to show it soon after that.

Hugh Jackman Talks Wolverine 3

Hugh Jackman Talks Wolverine 3

''I feel that I’m pushing harder than I’ve ever pushed before...''

Jackman-talks-Wolverine-3

Aside from the fact that Hugh Jackman seems convinced it will be his final time wielding the claws and that The Wolverine’s James Mangold is developing the script alongside Michael Green with an eye to direct, not much is known about the next film featuring everyone’s favourite hairy mutant. But Jackman, sitting down with Collider to discuss Pan, has shed a little light on the subject

According to the actor, the script is still in progress, and will, as has been reported before, feature Patrick Stewart returning as Professor Charles Xavier. “I’ll be really honest with you, the actual script in its full form we’re up to about Page 60. Obviously there’s a treatment, so it’s not fully done yet, we’re not fully there," says Jackman. "Patrick does figure in it that’s for sure. I think it’s a really important relationship but I want to see signs of that quasi-father/son sort of relationship that has not been seen before, and sides of particularly Professor X that have not been seen before. So we have some really, really cool ideas.”

But while Jackman is obviously excited to explore this facet of Wolverine’s personality, he is waiting to see how the script turns out: “I’m sounding a little cagey because this is the last time I’m playing him, and I have just made the commitment to myself, really, and told everyone that until that script is perfect, until it is that perfect way to sign out, I’m not gonna start shooting. So that’s why I don’t wanna say ‘Yes’ for sure, because until Page 115, 120, whatever it is…”

Still, despite his hesitation, he does seem more than ready to push ahead once he’s happy.  “The ultimate plan is let’s start shooting next year," continues the actor. "I’m starting the training, I’m starting the eating and mentally really preparing for it. It’s not just me, the studio as well – I’m trying to do something with this that’s a little special, a little different. I’ve got a very, very strong idea of what that is. I really have known for quite a long time how I want to finish this sort of odyssey that I’ve been on, this amazing journey. And I won’t let it fall anywhere in between. I won’t fall short of it. I feel that I’m pushing harder than I’ve ever pushed before. I suppose the stakes just go up when you announce before your last season that this is your last season, you don’t want one game to not be your best… People ask me, ‘How are you gonna be able to let it go?’ To me the only way you can let it go is if you left blood every day on the studio floor.” Health and safety will not be happy about that. For more from Jackman, head to Collider

The as-yet-untitled film currently has a release date of March 2, 2017.
