Richard Madden Joins Medici: Masters Of Florence

Richard Madden Joins Medici: Masters Of Florence

Dustin Hoffman also aboard the new historical drama miniseries

Richard-Madden-Medici

Given what his character experienced on Game Of Thrones, we’d think Richard Madden would be worried stepping into another drama about powerful families and their dangerous enemies. But with Dustin Hoffman also signing on, he’s showing no qualms about joining new historical miniseries Medici: Masters Of Florence

X-Files veteran Frank Spotnitz, no stranger to period drama (albeit alt-history) after this year’s The Man In The High Castle show for Amazon, has co-created the series with Nicolas Meyer, who has his own credentials with historical fiction on Time After Time. Sergio Mimica-Gezzan is set to direct all eight episodes of the series in Italy, which will follow the titular family’s rise from simple merchants to an incredibly powerful cartel that helped shepherd and economic and cultural revolution, albeit with plenty of moral grey areas and building a long list of enemies.

Madden will be the family’s business-minded son, Cosimo de’ Medici, while Hoffman is playing family patriarch Giovanni de’ Medici. “The Medici came to power at a time of great social and economic inequality,” Spotnitz says in a statement picked up by Deadline. “They were great disrupters. Their banking practices led to the creation of a middle class, making them unimaginably wealthy. The Medici in turn used their vast power and resources to challenge traditional thinking, ushering in a new era of revolutionary art and science such as the world had never seen. It’s a powerful story that resonates even now.” Production company Wild Bunch’s TV arm will be selling the rights to the show at the Mipcom media market in October, so we’ll see if a UK channel nabs the show. Plans for Florence And The Machine to supply the soundtrack are, at this time, entirely the invention of our brains.

Kate Winslet May Pick The Favourite

Kate Winslet May Pick The Favourite

Emma Stone and Olivia Colman in talks for Yorgos Lanthimos’ new fiilm

Kate-Winslet-In-Talks-The-Favourite

Following his critical and festival success with quirksome romantic drama The Lobster, there has been much pondering about what Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos will do for a follow-up. Turns out he’s headed for historical drama, and has Kate Winslet, Emma Stone and Olivia Colman all at different stages of talks for The Favourite.

Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara have written the script for this one, which will see Colman crowned as Queen Anne, final monarch of the Stuarts. Ruling between 1702 and 1707 (monarchs generally didn’t get to sit on the throne as long as Liz has). Winslet is circling the role of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, one of her majesty’s closest confidents, while Stone is looking to play Abigail Masham, a poverty-stricken distant relative of Sarah’s, who is suddenly granted a position at court tending to the Queen, resulting in a shifting balance of power between the courtiers.

Lanthimos and his producers have been looking for financing on this one, and such a good cast would surely help that. Winslet will next be seen in Steve Jobs (out November 13) and John Hillcoat’s Triple 9, which has yet to secure a UK date. Stone is on screen now in Woody Allen’s Irrational Man and is shooting La La Land, the new musical from whiplash director Damien Chazelle. Colman has a role in The Lobster (which arrives in the UK on October 16) and is gearing up to appear in Vadim Jean’s Lionel Bart biopic Consider Yourself

South Park

Donald Trump had a memorable cameo (in cartoon form) on Wednesday's episode of South Park, but we're guessing he isn't too thrilled with the appearance.

Exclusive New Look At Ben Wheatley's High-Rise

Exclusive New Look At Ben Wheatley's High-Rise

Luke Evans gets down to business

As producer Jeremy Thomas told us back in 2013, High-Rise has had a long journey to the screen. Ten years, in fact. The great Nic Roeg might have made the J.G. Ballard adaptation, but it’s fallen into the more-than-capable hands of Ben Wheatley. The new issue of Empire – on sale right now – debuts a new shot from the film below. Ladies, gentlemen and mild-manner janitors: we give you Luke Evans’ fiery filmmaker Wilder, no doubt up to minimal good.

It was Thomas’ son who alerted him to the Wheatley’s passion for Ballard’s dystopia. The upshot, skipping forward a few years, is a film that sees the Sightseers man overseeing a cast involving Evans, Tom Hiddleston, James Purefoy, Sienna Guillory and Jeremy Irons.

Set in 1975, High-Rise documents the shocking breakdown of class and social structures within a brand-new high-tech London apartment building as its residents, including the detached doctor Laing (Hiddleston), slowly give in to their more animalistic impulses, turning the building into a bacchanalian den of iniquity.

High-Rise hits UK cinemas in March 2016. For Empire’s full on-set report, head to your local newsagent (high or low-rise) and pick up the latest issue.
