Mila Kunis And Rob Zombie Working On Horror Comedy TV Series

Mila Kunis And Rob Zombie Working On Horror Comedy TV Series

They've developing Trapped for US cable network Starz

Mila-Kunis-Trapped

US cable network Starz is dipping its toe further into the bloody water of horror mixed with comedy after Ash Vs. Evil Dead. The channel now has Mila Kunis and Rob Zombie developing a show called Trapped.

While Kunis will be producing and Zombie offering his directorial services, Arrested Development veteran Joey Slamon will be on scripting duty after coming up with the idea for the series. The plot apparently takes place during a single night in the home of a wealthy family who are under attack by a murderous cult. There are no details on when it might hit screens – things are only just getting moving, after all – but if it all works out, it’ll be a half-hour mixture of laughs and screams that sounds a little bit like You’re Next: the series.

Kunis, last seen in Jupiter Ascending, will also mix horror and humour in Hell And Back a stop-motion ‘toon that hits American screens on October 2, but doesn’t yet have a confirmed UK date. Zombie’s latest film, 31, which features kidnap victims trying to survive in a deadly game against lethal clowns, is in post-production now and should be hitting cinemas next year.

Michael Shannon Ready For Loving

Michael Shannon Ready For Loving

Nick Kroll also aboard Jeff Nichols' new film

Michael-Shannon-Loving

Some directors have actors they like to work with in all their films, Mud’s Jeff Nichols has Michael Shannon and he’s keeping the tradition alive with is latest, Loving, which is also adding Nick Kroll.

Nichols’ new film is inspired by 2011 HBO documentary The Loving Story, in which Nancy Buirski chronicles the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, who married in 1958 in defiance of Virginia’s Racial Integrity Act of 1924. They were arrested and exiled from the state, but that kicked off a landmark civil rights debate that led to a Supreme Court case on the matter that invalidated laws banning interracial marriage.

Joel Edgerton is playing Richard, while Ruth Negga is aboard as Mildred. Nichols wrote the script and has already started filming in Richmond, Virginia, with Bill Camp, Marton Csokas and Jon Bass also joining the cast.

Loving will mark the fifth collaboration between Nichols and Shannon, and one of the actor’s upcoming releases is the director’s most recent film, Midnight Special. He’ll also show up in Wolves, Freeheld and 99 Homes, which is out in the UK on Friday. Kroll, a regular on US comedy series The League, is part of the cast for Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups and has lent his voice to Seth Rogen’s ‘toon Sausage Party, which will arrive here on August 12 next year.

Upstream Colour's Shane Carruth Plots Nautical Adventure

Upstream Colour's Shane Carruth Plots Nautical Adventure

He's ready to start charting The Modern Ocean

Shane-Carruth-Modern-Ocean

With 2004’s Primer and 2013’s Upstream Colour, Shane Carruth has ploughed his own idiosyncratic cinematic furrow, keeping to his visions for the films. He’s tried to set other movies up since without success and has now signed with a big talent agency in the hopes of getting his next film, The Modern Ocean, funded

Carruth has been working on the film for a few years and he’s now ready to give it the sort of budget he could only dream of previously, while also keeping the sort of control you might expect from a man known for writing, directing, producing, co-starring in and even distributing his work in cinemas. He told The Playlist about the film at the Berlin Film Festival a couple of years ago: "There’s no genre or otherworldly elements in it, it’s set in the modern day on shipping routes, with people who build routes to trade – you know, vanilla from Madagascar and then pick up crude oil and drop it off in India. They build up this intellectual property of a route that is profitable and they sell it off to a bigger corporation…They’re building up the proof that this route will work, and selling it off, dealing with tidal systems and routes and currents and weather. So there are these competing companies and these inner personal things happening. It’s pirates, repo men, bolt cutters and sniper rifles, but at the same time it’s the same emotional language as Upstream Colour, just magnified. I’m very excited by it."

With luck, all this will mean he’ll be able to start shooting the new film soon and we’ll see new work from him before too long. For more from Carruth, check out our podcast interview with him from the time of Upstream Colour’s UK release.
