Invest In The First Trailer For The Big Short

Invest In The First Trailer For The Big Short

Adam McKay banks on a financial-crisis drama

Looking like it's pitched somewhere between Margin Call and The Wolf Of Wall Street, ensemble drama The Big Short is a bit of a departure for Anchorman director Adam McKay. Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Melissa Leo, Brad Pitt, Marisa Tomei, Karen Gillan and Selena Gomez are all among the impressive cast riding the financial crisis, and the first trailer has just arrived online, courtesy of studio Paramount.

McKay has been developing this one for a while now, working up something very different from his usual comedy brand. It's based on Moneyball author Michael Lewis’ book, subtitled 'Inside The Doomsday Machine', and follows several key people who had roles in creative the toxic credit bubble that sent the financial markets into panic mode over the last decade.

Carell is Steve Eisman, a money manager who shorted subprime mortgages for FrontPoint Partners, while Gosling is Deutsche Bank trader Greg Lippmann. Bale is Michael Burry, the founder of the Scion Capital and one of the first people to predict the coming crisis. And Pitt, in more of a supporting part, is Ben Hockett, a partner at Cornwall Capital.

McKay also wrote the screenplay with Charles Randolph (Love And Other Drugs). Pitt is also among the producers, and shooting took place earlier this year in New Orleans. We don't have a UK release date yet, but some European territories get it in January, so early 2016 sounds a safe bet.

Lewis' book is published in the UK by Penguin.

Sophie Cookson Books The Crucifixion

Sophie Cookson Books The Crucifixion

Starring in Xavier Gens' new horror

While lots of young actresses pay their dues in a horror movie or two before breaking out into something more mainstream, Sophie Cookson is doing it the other way round. Having turned heads in Kingsman: The Secret Service, she's now signed up for The Crucifixion, a supernatural thriller from genre staple Xavier Gens.

It's another project that comes courtesy of screenwriters Carey and Chad Hayes (see also The Conjuring and its sequel). This one involves an investigation into the death of a nun. Did the priest responsible simply murder a woman with a mental illness, or did he genuinely lose a battle with a demonic entity during an exorcism-gone-wrong?

Shades of the real-life story of Anneliese Michel there, previously filmed as both the German Requiem and Scott Derrickson's The Exorcism Of Emily Rose. But with the director of the bonkers Frontier(s) and The Divide at the helm, we can expect a decent spin on the material.

Javier Botet (Mama) is also starring, and the shoot - which will take place in the UK and Romania - got underway yesterday.

Maisie Williams And Asa Butterfield Join Arrivals

Maisie Williams And Asa Butterfield Join Arrivals

Co-starring in the indie drama

Recently juggling Game Of Thrones with Doctor Who and Devil And The Deep Blue Sea, Maisie Williams has just added another project into her crowded diary. She'll co-star with Asa Butterfield in Arrivals, a drama by The Outskirts' director Peter Hutchings.

Butterfield will play a hypochondriac university dropout working as a baggage handler in Cape Town. But he's forced to confront his peronal issues when he comes into the orbit of Williams' free-spirited character. She has a terminal illness, and a bucket list she needs help with...

Fergal Rock, a relative newcomer with a handful of short films and some episodes of Irish soap Fair City to his name, wrote the screenplay. Kalahari Film and Media, a South African production company behind Dredd and District 9, are involved in the set-up.

Hutchings is aiming to shoot Arrivals this winter. We'll next see Williams in Doctor Who in a few weeks, and Butterfield in Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, out next March.

Sicario Sequel In The Works

Sicario Sequel In The Works

Lionsgate wants a follow-up to the drug war thriller

Sicario-Sequel-Developing

Despite its positive response at various festivals and the good reviews it has been getting, Denis Villeneuve’s drug war thriller Sicario is not the sort of film we’d imagined generating a sequel before it’s even on wide release. Lionsgate and writer Taylor Sheridan clearly think differently, as one is in the early stages

Sicario, which sees Emily Blunt’s FBI agent recruited for a decidedly unsanctioned mission to bring down a Mexican drug kingpin, has already kicked off its run in the States, opening in just six cinemas with an impressive $401,288. It’s expected to perform well as it expands.

Variety reports that the spin-off is in the early stages of development with both Sheridan and Villeneuve involved, though the director hasn’t yet indicated whether he’ll simply be a producer on any possible new film or if he’ll be back calling the shots.

As for the subject matter, we’ll leave a potential spoiler warning here, especially since the film hasn’t even been released in the UK yet. But it’ll apparently focus on Benicio Del Toro’s mysterious tough guy who is part of the team. “Before the release of this movie, I was talking to Denis and I said what happened to this character?” Lionsgate motion picture group co-chair Patrick Wachsberger tells the trade mag. “Where is Benicio going?” We may yet get to find out.

The film, which also stars Josh Brolin, Jon Bernthal and Daniel Kaluuya, will be out in the UK on October 8.

Though he's Canadian by birth, screenwriter Martin Gero was living in New York City, just a few blocks from Times Square, when police evacuated the iconic tourist trap in 2010 after discovering a car bomb in the heart of the theater district.

"That image has always stayed with me," Gero tells
