Having found a great trio of female leads for novel adaptation The Girl On The Train, director Tate Taylor and the producers are now looking for some male supporting roles. And according to Variety, they have their eyes on Chris Evans and Jared Leto.
Erin Cressida Wilson adapted the script from Paula Hawkins’ much buzzed-about book, which drew comparisons to Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl for its narrative. We’ll caution that even the basic synopsis might be considered a spoiler, but read on if you wish… The story follows a recently divorced woman called Rachel (Emily Blunt) struggling with her life and sinking into alcoholism to try to cope. She sees a seemingly perfect couple from her London train ride every day and starts to fantasise about their lives. But things take a turn when she sees something shocking…
Rachel Ferguson and Haley Bennett are also confirmed aboard, but it’s still early days for both Evans and Leto. Though they’ve both shown plenty of interest in taking roles – as husbands to two of the women – they have yet to make actual deals. So don’t count them in just yet.
Evans, of course was back on our screens this year as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Age Of Ultron. He directed and starred in indie romantic drama Before We Go and has recently finished work on Captain America: Civil War, which arrives here on April 29 next year. Leto has also been busy in the superhero arena, albeit on the side of the villains, and he’ll be seen as The Joker in Suicide Squad, due here on August 5 next year.
One of the memorable events from this weekend’s Emmy Awards ceremony was the surprise appearance of 30 Rock actor and comedian Tracy Morgan, who was severely injured in a road accident in June last year. He’s well on the road to recovery and is now lining up his first job since the incident – Morgan is in talks to join the Ice Cube/Charlie Day comedy film Fist Fight.
The New Line comedy has a script from Van Robichaux and Evan Susser, and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Richie Keen planning to direct. The basic concept finds Day as a mild-mannered English teacher who must man up when a colleague at his school who thinks he’s trying to get him fired challenges him to a good old-fashioned punch-up. Unless he somehow gets out of it, or manages to learn some amazing ability, we’d suggest this ends with a Charlie Day pancake.
Morgan, who is playing the school’s gym coach, joins other recent hires including Breaking Bad’s Dean Norris and 22 Jump Street’s Jillian Bell. The comedian was last seen in Chris Rock’s Top Five, and also had a role in the long-delayed, controversially released Accidental Love, AKA David O. Russell comedy Nailed. Fist Fight will mark his return to cinemas.
With their comedy sketch series Key & Peele now finished, Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key are turning their attention to solo projects. And Peele is headed in an unexpected direction: horror.
The performer has a deal to write and director a horror thriller called Get Out for Jason Blum’s mini-budget company Blumhouse Productions. It’ll follow a young African-American man who visits the sprawling estate owned by his white girlfriend’s family. And we, assume, discovers something terrible.
“People know me for my work in comedy, but now I’ll get to focus on my passion for writing and directing horror films,” Peele says in a statement picked up by The Wrap. “Like comedy, horror has an ability to provoke thought and further the conversation on real social issues in a very powerful way. Get Out takes on the task of exploring race in America, something that hasn’t really been done within the genre since Night Of The Living Dead 47 years ago. It’s long overdue.” Big shoes to step into, then, but Peele has proved he’s a keen purveyor of social commentary through comedy, so it’ll be fascinating to see what he does with horror as a tool.
Key and Peele aren’t completely going their separate ways – they have comedy gangster pic Keanu making its way through post-production and are developing at least one film based on a sketch from the show. Then there are their efforts to make a new Police Academy movie. Peele also has a voice in DreamWorks Animation’s kids’ book adaptation Captain Underpants, which will be out in 2017.
