Jason Statham Says Viva La Madness

Jason Statham Says Viva La Madness

He's starring in a potential new TV series

Jason-Statham-Viva-La-Madness

Aside from a few talk show appearances, Jason Statham’s screen career has largely been limited to the cinema. But he’s got plans to change all that, aiming to star in and produce a telly adaptation of J.J. Connolly’s book Viva La Madness.

Connolly is best known for writing Layer Cake (the adaptation of which launched Matthew Vaughn’s directorial career), and this is the follow-up. The plot finds an anonymous hero stranded in the Caribbean thanks to his criminal activities back home in London. Looking for a way back into that life he knew, he joins forces with two London gangsters, Sonny King and Roy “Twitchy” Burns.

“Viva La Madness, with its riveting characters and twisting storyline, is a volatile cocktail of action and comedy that only J.J. Connolly can create,” says Gaumont International TV CEO Katie O’Connell Marsh in a statement picked up by The Hollywood Reporter. “Jason Statham, known for his roles in the Transporter trilogy, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, The Bank Job, as well as the recent Furious 7 and Spy, brings such strength and credibility to his characters but also has an effortless shade of vulnerability that gives him so much dimension on screen.”

Gaumont, which helped bring Hannibal to our screens, is looking for a network partner in the States to make this happen. Surely someone will jump at the chance to bring The Stath to the tellybox? Film-wise, Statham will next be seen in Mechanic: Resurrection, which is hitting UK cinemas on August 26 next year.

Point Break Surfs Up A New Trailer

Point Break Surfs Up A New Trailer

''We have to give more than we take...''

You might have seen the latest featurette on the real world surfing stunts pulled off for the new version of Point Break on the site a couple of days ago. Here’s the new trailer looking to convince you to give the remake a shot.

Luke Bracey takes over the role originated by Keanu Reeves, that of young FBI agent Johnny Utah sent undercover with a roving group of criminals (this time their interests are expanded to a larger number of extreme sports) who are pulling off daring heists that push their skills to the limit. He meets the charismatic leader, Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez, replacing Patrick Swayze) and soon learns that getting too close could compromise his legal duty.

This time around, the script – written by Kurt Wimmer – aims to give the thieves more story to go along with their expanded repertoire, following a mystical path to enlightenment and using their ill-gotten gains to give back to people. If it all feels more Fast & Furious (mysticism aside) than the original Point Break, that’s the film trying to establish its own identity in the face of claims that it’s unnecessary.

Ericson Core is in the director’s chair with Delroy Lindo, Ray Winstone and Teresa Palmer among the cast. The film will be out on January 8.

Elizabeth Reaser Joins Ouija 2

Elizabeth Reaser Joins Ouija 2

As the sequel kicks off shooting

Elizabeth-Reaser-Ouija-2

Thanks to a healthy $102.5 million worldwide return on a teeny budget, Universal’s board game-based horror Ouija summoned up the chance of a sequel. Annalise Basso is already in the cast for the movie and now Twilight’s Elizabeth Reaser has joined up

Oculus’ Mike Flanagan is directing, working from a script he wrote with regular collaborator Jeff Howard. The plot will find Basso (who worked on Oculus) as a young woman who decides that the Ouija board is the ideal method with which to contact her late father. Had she watched the first movie, she might have figured out that this is a very, very bad idea. No details have been given as to who Reaser is playing, though there’s a good chance she’s the young woman’s mother.

Flanagan’s involvement gives us some hope that the sequel will have a little more too it than the decidedly lightweight and less-than-thrilling original. He’s taking aim at an October 21, 2016 release date.

Reaser has most recently worked on indie movies One And Two and Hello, My Name Is Doris, neither of which have firm UK release dates yet, though the latter played the Edinburgh Festival.
