First Images From Marvel's Jessica Jones Arrive

First Images From Marvel's Jessica Jones Arrive

Alias Netflix's next Defender

We've seen Daredevil, and Luke Cage is on the way, but before that, there's the small matter of Marvel's second Netflix Defenders series Jessica Jones. The ex-superhero private eye makes her screen debut in November, and the first set of official stills has just arrived, showcasing Krysten Ritter (as Jones), Mike Colter (as Cage), David Tennant (Kilgrave), and Carrie-Anne Moss.

The show (principally inspired by Brian Michael Bendis' Alias comics) finds Jones picking up the pieces after a short-lived stint as superhero Jewel. Suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after using her powers, she decides to leave the life behind. But she doesn’t entirely forsake her past: she opens up a New York detective agency, which tackles cases for both ordinary people and superheroes.

David Tennant is Zebediah Kilgrave, also known as The Purple Man, who will be one of the big threats to Jessica, while Rachael Taylor is on board as Patricia “Trish” Walker, Jones’ closest friend.

And Mike Colter is playing Luke Cage, AKA Power Man: he of the bulletproof skin and the frequent team-ups with Iron Fist. Moss is Harper, a character that doesn't seem to have a basis in the comics, but has been descibed as “a no-nonsense woman who could prove a powerful ally to Jessica... If Jessica doesn’t completely alienate her first.”

Jessica Jones will be on Netflix in its entirety from November 20, with Daredevil's second season following in the first half of next year, and Luke Cage - which is shooting now - sometime after that.

America's Got Talent's Season 10 finale came down to ventriloquist Paul Zerdin and stand-up comedian Drew Lynch. In the end, Zerdin was named the winner by only a 1 percent margin.

Dowdle Brothers Count Six Minutes To Freedom

Dowdle Brothers Count Six Minutes To Freedom

True-life action for the No Escape team

Having made their initial mark in the horror genre with The Poughkeepsie Tapes, Quarantine, Devil and As Above So Below, writing-directing team Drew and John Erick Dowdle recently moved into action with the thriller No Escape. Sticking with the latter for the time being, their next film will be Six Minutes To Freedom, based on the real-life adventures of Kurt Muse.

Muse got into trouble in Panama in the late '80s for running a pirate radio station broadcasting dissent against Manuel Noriega. He was imprisoned in the notorious Panamanian jail Carcel Modelo, and was liberated when the US invaded Panama to oust Noriega in December, 1989. His rescue was dubbed Operation Acid Gambit and carried out by the US Delta Force led by Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin. We've possibly got part of that wrong.

A small story of escape in a wider context of violent revolution is exactly what we've just seen in No Escape, so it's in many ways familiar territory for director John Erick and co-screenwriter Drew. But that's not to say it isn't a decent canvas for some visceral thrills. Muse and his Delta Force liberators survived a helicopter crash during their escape, for example. Expect a set-piece from that.

Work on the script is currently ongoing, with Six Minutes To Freedom currently expected in cinemas sometime in 2017.

Ice Cube Unwraps Humbug

Ice Cube Unwraps Humbug

Getting Scrooged in a Christmas comedy

Currently riding high on the success of Ride Along, the Jump Street films and Straight Outta Compton, Ice Cube is about to have a very happy Christmas. He's reportedly negotiated an eight-figure fee to star in Humbug, a Scrooge-riffing comedy to be directed by his Ride Along and Barbershop honcho Tim Story.

Obviously taking Charles Dickens' perennial A Christmas Carol as its inspiration, Humbug will see Cube playing an ultra-capitalist real-estate mogul shown the error of his greedy ways when visited by a succession of didactic ghosts on Christmas Eve. "Any motherfucker who go around saying 'Merry Christmas' deserve a cap in his ass," he probably won't say.

MGM, New Line and Disney all wanted the project, but Universal won the bidding war. Todd R. Jones and R. Richey Jones (Johnson Family Vacation, Rio) wrote the screenplay that caused all the buzz. Whether we're talking about an R-rated comedy or a more family-friendly affair (like Cube's Are We There Yet? and its sequel) remains to be seen.

Cube is currently shooting Barbershop 3, and we'll next see him in Ride Along 2 (directed once again by Story), which is out on January 22. Humbug is expected for Christmas 2017, but that's not yet set in stone.

How Fiorina Bested Trump and 6 More Highlights From CNN's Republican Debate

CNN's Republican debate on Wednesday night was still the Donald Trump show, but not in the way he may have expected.

As the current frontrunner in the race for the party's presidential nomination, the business mogul could very well have walked away as the night's winner. But his competition, namely

Scott Glenn's Stick Returns For Daredevil Season 2

Scott Glenn's Stick Returns For Daredevil Season 2

The old man is back...

Stick-Returning-Daredevil

One of the definite highlights of the first season of Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil was the gruff, unyielding appearance of Scott Glenn as Matt Murdock’s trainer, Stick. Good news if you were also a fan of the foul-mouthed, beat-down-delivering old geezer: he’ll be back for the new season.

We learned that Stick had helped Matt (played by Charlie Cox on the show) master his skills and learn martial arts from a young age following the death of the boy’s father. And that he’d walked out on Matt when the kid started to treat him like a surrogate dad; or at least try something approaching friendship. His re-entry into Matt’s life was marked by subterfuge, as Stick had a mission of his own to complete, while finding time to lecture our hero about going soft.

What he’ll be up to in the coming season has yet to be revealed, but we’re certainly ready to see more of him, albeit working best in small doses. The cameras are rolling on the new episodes with Elden Hensen and Deborah Ann Woll back as Foggy and Karen and Vincent D’Onofrio set to appear in some capacity as Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk, now likely manipulating things from behind bars. New this time around? Jon Bernthal as Frank “The Punisher” Castle and Elodie Yung as Elektra Natchios, sure to be a big influence on Matt. The show will return to Netflix in 2016, probably launching around the same time as this year’s batch, which would put it in April.

The Latest Bridge Of Spies Trailer Arrives

The Latest Bridge Of Spies Trailer Arrives

Tom Hanks knows every person matters

We’re creeping ever close to the release of the new Steven Spielberg period drama Bridge Of Spies, with the film due in November. The new trailer is online and can be viewed below.

Tom Hanks stars in the film as James Donovan, an insurance lawyer who was pushed headfirst into the Cold War during the 1960s when he had to negotiate for the release of downed U2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers (Austin Stowell) after the airman was shot down over Russia. Mark Rylance co-stars as Rudolf Abel, a suspected KGB spy who was defended by Donovan in a US courtroom in 1957, and is, thanks to back-channel negotiation, the likely swap for Powers in a deal with the Soviets. It’s an agreement that doesn’t exactly sit well for America at large, and Donovan feels the brunt of the protests.

Bridge Of Spies boasts a screenplay begun by Matt Charman and overhauled by the Coen brothers. The title as it now stands refers to the popular Cold War nickname for what's now the Glienicke Bridge connecting Wannsee and Potsdam: East and West Germany at the time the film is set. Its official name then was the Bridge Of Unity, but it garnered its alternate moniker due to its notoriety as a prisoner exchange point for Western and Soviet powers.

With Amy Ryan, Alan Alda, Eve Hewson, Peter McRobbie and Sebastian Koch in the cast, the film will be out in the UK on November 6.
