The Knick Ticks In With A Season 2 Trailer

The Knick Ticks In With A Season 2 Trailer

Clive Owen is back on the wards

Coming across as a sort of turn-of-the-century House, albeit with Clive Owen as the driven, self-medicating medic and Steven Soderbergh dictating the look and style of the show, The Knick roared through its first run of chaos, corruption and corpses last year. The new series on the way and the teaser trailer has arrived.

Owen is back as Dr. John W. Thackery, the complicated surgical genius who works – when he’s not sleeping with nurses or injecting/sniffing/snacking on illegal intoxicants – at the Knickerbocker Hospital in 1900s New York. He knows he has what it takes to develop new procedures and save more lives at a time when medicine was still part savagery, but he can’t always seem to get out of his own way.

The show, boasting a kinetic energy from Soderbergh and show creators Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, was praised for its look and feel. It’s not for the faint of heart…

With Andre Holland, Jeremy Bobb, Eve Hewson and Michael Angarano among those back for the new series, The Knick kicks off on Cinemax across the pond on October 16 and should be making its way to Sky shortly after.

Justin Timberlake Trolls Us All For DreamWorks Animation

Justin Timberlake Trolls Us All For DreamWorks Animation

Joining Anna Kendrick in the 'toon

Justin-Timberlake-trolls

Things have been fairly quiet on the news front for DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls project. While Mike Mitchell jumped on board to direct and Anna Kendrick was cast last year, it’s been tumbleweeds since then. No longer! Justin Timberlake will also be lending his vocals to the movie

Now billed as a musical comedy – makes sense, since both Kendrick and Timberlake have proven pipes – the film will be based around the wild-haired dolls originally created in Denmark in 1959 and became a toy craze.

Mitchell, along with writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Burger, is cooking up the story of Branch (Timberlake), described as a hardcore survivalist who takes things a little too far. He’ll still come in handy, though, on an adventure with Kendrick’s Princess Poppy. That’s all we know about the movie so far, though it has a November 4, 2016 release date in the US and should be with us a little earlier, on October 21.

Timberlake has largely letting his film acting career take a backseat to music and other work recently, including providing the score to The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea, which is out next year.

Woody Harrelson Recruited For War Of The Planet Of The Apes

Woody Harrelson Recruited For War Of The Planet Of The Apes

He'll be the big villain

Woody-Harrelson-War-Planet-Apes

Woody Harrelson has had some experience with a big franchise thanks to the Hunger Games series. He’ll be tapping his villainous side for another as he’s joining the cast of War Of The Planet Of The Apes.

Unlike Dawn’s Toby Kebbell, however, he won’t be slipping into a performance capture suit. Harrelson, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is on board to play a human threat to our simian heroes called the Colonel.

As for what else might be happening in the movie? That’s still tightly under wraps, though Dawn showed a conflict between the human survivors of the virus and Caesar’s (Andy Serkis) ape forces until a sort of truce was reached, one that was threatened by the coming of human reinforcements from outside San Francisco. We’d guess that someone called Colonel would be in charge of a force like that.

Harrelson joins a cast that is still itself much of a mystery, though Gabriel Chavarria was recently added. Matt Reeves is back as director, with Mark Bomback once again on script duty, with the film due on July 21, 2017. Next up for Harrelson is The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (November 20), Now You See Me: The Second Act (June 10 next year) and crime thriller Triple 9 (no date yet). He’s currently at work on Rob Reiner’s LBJ, about US President Lyndon B. Johnson, which has just added Burn Notice’s Jeffrey Donovan as John F. Kennedy

First Teaser Trailer For The Divergent Series: Allegiant

First Teaser Trailer For The Divergent Series: Allegiant

''There's no turning back...''

The third instalment of the Divergent series – Allegiant, which recently lopped the Part 1 from its name as the second part became Ascendant – is headed our way next year. So the first teaser trailer has arrived to catch us up on where Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) and the rest are headed next.

Serving first as a “Previous on The Divergent Series” recap before offering some glimpses of the new film, the trailer is very much more on the tease side, which is actually refreshing.

This new movie, in case you were unaware, finds Tris, Four (Theo James) and their ragtag group of friends, enemies and undecideds having won their battle against the machinations of Erudite faction leader Jeanine (Kate Winslet). They’ve discovered, thanks to Tris’ ability to unlock a message, that their shattered, dystopian Chicago is not the final refuge for the human race, but was used as an experiment to development divergents such as our heroine. As for what she can do to save the wider world is a mystery, but she’ll learn more from the mysterious Bureau of Genetic Welfare, which includes new franchise face Jeff Daniels as David…

With Robert Schwentke back directing from a script that has seen work by Noah Oppenheim, Adam Cooper, Bill Collage and Stephen Chbosky, The Divergent Series: Allegiant also features Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Naomi Watts, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q and Bill Skarsgard. It’ll hit our cinemas on March 18.

Want To Be An Empire Journalist?

Want To Be An Empire Journalist?

We're looking for interns for the BFI London Film Festival

Do you dream of being the next Empire writer? Do you know Joss Whedon from James Cameron? And would you have the guts to scream questions at movie stars on the red carpet? If the answer to those questions is ‘yes’, read on...

Once again Empire are giving you the opportunity to get something spectacular on your CV. Three lucky people can get their hands on a VIP pass to The BFI London Film Festival. And as if that wasn’t good enough, you’ll be a roving reporter for the world’s biggest movie magazine and will have your work published on our very own website. Yes, this one.

The VIP pass will give you access to all the press screenings, press conferences and filmmaker afternoon teas, where journalists chat with directors, producers and actors at The May Fair Hotel over delicious scones. The Empire team will brief you on what films and events need covering, and then you’ll be sent off around central London to get what your temporary editor wants.

Sound good? Of course it does. So if you’re over 18 (sorry, 16 and 17-year-olds) and have a thing for films, apply here to have a chance of being selected. In the meantime, here are three tips that may help your application from the person who’ll be reading them:

You need to be able to write:

This sounds obvious, but we can’t stress the importance of correct spelling and grammar. Any film writer would be in trouble if they filed their copy with errors and mistakes, so we expect the same from applicants. The Empire team are amazing but extremely busy, and they certainly don’t want to spend half their day rewriting copy. So double-check names, movie titles and basic spelling, because a few errors could easily find you in the rejection pile.

You need to know how to write reviews and understand Empire's audience:

A large part of this job will be attending film screenings and writing reviews of those films for Empire. Writing a film review can be tough regardless of your reaction, but you need to get your opinions across with knowledge, humour and information without readers pressing the SPOILER ALERT! button. Part of the application requires you to write a review of a film, any film, in 100 words, so make sure it’s interesting, readable, entertaining, and most importantly, tells us what you actually think of it. Amazingly, people forget that...

You do not need experience:

If you have aspirations of being a film journalist but haven’t got any experience – don’t worry. The digital editor-in-chief is looking for someone with potential, not endless clippings and internships to their name. If you have that, that’s fine, but if you don’t, make sure you show us you love movies and Empire in your covering letter.

Good luck!
