Bingbing Li Enters The Nest

Bingbing Li Enters The Nest

Producing and starring in the Chinese-Australian co-production

Re-teaming with Darclight, the company behind her most recent movie Zhongkui: Snow Girl And The Dark Crystal, Bingbing Li will next head for The Nest. She's producing and will star in the arachnophobic sci-fi thriller. Kimble Rendall (Second-Unit on the Matrix sequels, I, Robot and Killer Elite) is directing.

The plot involves a team of scientists who, in order to get to the "discovery of the century", must negotiate a labyrinth of carnivorous spiders. There's always bloody something, isn't there?

It's a Chinese-Australian co-production: the fourth to come about through an arrangement between Screen Australia and the China Film Co-Production Corporation since 2006. It's being touted as the biggest-budget project to come out of that deal so far, although the number isn't being specified. Given that the previous three co-productions - Children Of The Silk Road, The Dragon Pearl and 33 Postcards - amount to a combined total budget of about $60m, it doesn't necessarily mean The Nest is huge.

Nevertheless, “With a mesmerising story, the brilliance of director Kimble Rendall, the breathtaking talent of Li Bingbing and an A-List special FX team [X-Men: DOFP's Rising Sun PIctures], Nest is perfectly positioned to be a major commercial success with thrill-seeking audiences all over the world,” says producer Ying Ye. “We are excited to be working with the extremely talented Li Bingbing again, who is already a superstar in China and has a very broad appeal worldwide, winning over the hearts of audiences as well as top box office numbers.”

Pre-production is underway on the Gold Coast, for a release sometime next year.

New Trailer For The 5th Wave Invades

New Trailer For The 5th Wave Invades

Chloe Moretz vs alien predators

Following yesterday's new Point Break clip, here's a wave of a different sort. The next salvo in an alien invasion is nigh, and only Chloe Grace Moretz can save us. Have a look at how she gets on in the latest trailer for The 5th Wave.

Moretz stars as Cassie Sullivan, a young woman who's survived the four previous waves of deadly extra-terrestrial attacks that have left Earth a darkened, doomed place where the chamaeleonic alien Others pick off survivors. First they came for our power, then they wiped out major cities. Next was a viral attack that sickened a vast swathe of Earth’s population, followed by the fourth incursion, aimed at eradicating the hold-outs. The fifth is on its way...

In the wake of this destruction, Cassie still hopes to rescue her younger brother. She prefers to travel alone, but then she meets Evan Walker (Alex Roe), a mysterious young man who could be her big hope. Can she trust him?

J. Blakeson (The Disappearance Of Alice Creed) is the director, with Liev Schreiber, Ron Livingston, Maria Bello, Maika Monroe and Terry Serpico bulking up the rest of the cast. Susannah Grant penned the adaptation from Rick Yancy’s novel, and The 5th Wave is out in the UK on January 22.

Knock Knock's Ana de Armas Joins Overdrive

Knock Knock's Ana de Armas Joins Overdrive

She'll hit the highway with Scott Eastwood

Ana-DeArmas-Overdrive

Now that the film has locked down at least one of its male leads in Scott Eastwood, the team behind Overdrive have turned their attention to a crucial female role. They’ve hired Knock Knock’s Ana de Armas for the part

Having menaced Keanu Reeves in the Eli Roth thriller that arrived in the UK a couple of months ago, de Armas will now be part of the long-gestating vehicular thriller. The script, written by Wanted’s Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, focuses on two American brothers who decide to push their car-thief career into top gear by heading to France. But they end up running afoul of a much more dangerous criminal.  How de Armas’ character will fit in has yet to be announced, though we could see her plotting as the criminal king pin if the film decides to go an interesting way. Eastwood will be one of the brothers, with Antonio Negret looking to start the cameras and the car wheels rolling in Marseilles from November until February.

Off the back of her devious role in Knock Knock, de Armas has scored at least one other part – she’ll share the screen with Miles Teller and Jonah Hill in Arms And The Dudes, which lands here on April 8 next year.

New Creed Trailer Steps Into The Ring

New Creed Trailer Steps Into The Ring

Michael B. Jordan's having a Rocky time

In what promises to be one of the more interesting turns for a long-in-the-tooth franchise, Rocky spin-off Creed is on its way with Michael B. Jordan in a starring role. The new trailer is online and can be viewed below.

Shot by Jordan’s Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler from a script he wrote with Aaron Covington, Creed finds the actor as Adonis Johnson, a driven young fighter who despite the boxing ability pulsing through his veins, never knew his father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died in the ring before he was born.

But while he’s not so eager to embrace connections to his dad, he’s been fighting all of his life with little discipline, so he knows he needs a good trainer. That finds him crossing paths with one of Apollo’s most famous opponents: Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). Despite his misgivings and insistence that he’s out of the fight game, Rocky sees in Adonis the spirit of his father, and agrees to take him on. And both men realise they need this, as they’re facing dangerous opponents.

With Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad and real life pro boxer Anthony Bellew in the cast, Creed has shifted its release date slightly, and will now arrive in UK cinemas next February.

Disney And Rob Marshall Are Making A New Mary Poppins Film

Disney And Rob Marshall Are Making A New Mary Poppins Film

Set 20 years later...

New-Mary-Poppins

Given her well documented objection to anyone – and particularly Disney – adapting her stories into other media, we can’t imagine P.L. Travers, were she alive today, would be thrilled to learn that the Mouse House is returning to the Mary Poppins well. But it’s true: Into The Woods’ Rob Marshall is developing a new film about the character.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the studio and filmmakers (including Marshall’s Woods collaborators John DeLuca and Mark Platt) have been working with the Travers estate and already have the backing of Poppins co-songwriter Richard Sherman. He won’t be providing the main music this time, however; that job falls to Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

As for the source material? The team is sticking with Travers’ tales: the Poppins stories expand beyond the original tome across a book series that ran between 1934 and 1988; the 1964 original only drew from the first instalment. The new story will reportedly find Mary returning to the Banks family in Depression-era London, at least once a scriptwriter has been hired to work out the bits between the songs. It’s still early days, so there’s no date for this yet, but expect Disney to push ahead with this with alacrity.
