Rachel McAdams Joins Doctor Strange

Rachel McAdams Joins Doctor Strange

She says she's definitely aboard

Rachel-McAdams-Doctor-Strange-Confirmed

Though there has yet to be the usual big announcement by Marvel, hearing it from Rachel McAdams’ own mouth should surely be enough evidence. So after entering talks with the company, the actress will indeed star in Doctor Strange alongside Benedict Cumberbatch.

Quite which character she’ll be playing – whether it’s from the comic continuity or not – has yet to be revealed, since McAdams didn’t let on to The Wrap, probably for fear that armed mystical ninjas would burst into the interview room and silence everyone. There’s a chance she’ll be Clea, a student of Strange’s and someone who becomes both important to him and can manipulate the mystical realm almost as well as he can. Of course, even if she carries the same name, it’s possible that a lot will change about her on the journey to the screen.

But she’s just the latest piece of the puzzle, with director Scott Derrickson gathering the people he needs in front of the camera, including Cumberbatch in the title role, Tilda Swinton a great, if controversial choice to play his teacher in the mystic arts, the Ancient One, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as rival Baron Mordo. Mads Mikkelsen is also in talks to play a villain, so the cast is coming together.

In case you need a refresher on the basics, the film is using the character originally conjured by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Dr. Stephen Strange starts his story as a selfish New York surgeon who loses his professional skills in a car crash. After falling on hard times, he seeks out the Ancient One, and learns to tap into psychic and magical powers. In recognition of his selfless efforts to thwart evil fellow disciple Mordo, he’s taught the mystical arts and sets out to defeat other shady sorcerers and various villains.

Doctor Strange, written by Jon Spaihts, kicks off shooting later this year in the UK ready for an October 28, 2016 release.

Emma Watson Infiltrates A Cult In The Colonia Trailer

Emma Watson Infiltrates A Cult In The Colonia Trailer

She wants to rescue Daniel Bruhl

Throwing aside the idea of the damsel in distress, Emma Watson takes matters into her own hands when Daniel Brühl is snatched from her. She’s been proactive when it comes to the first trailer for new drama Colonia, too. While the video from her Facebook page isn't working for us at the moment, take a look via YouTube below.

Colonia follows Costa-Gavras’s Missing (1982) in charting the brutal aftermath of the Pinochet-led coup in Chile in 1973. That film had Jack Lemmon trying to get to the bottom of his son’s disappearance; this one sees Emma Watson’s Lena doing likewise when her partner, Daniel (Daniel Brühl) is abducted by the secret police. Lena tracks him down to Colonia Dignidad, an anti-communist sect run by Michael Nyqvist’s lay preacher Paul Schäfer. There she joins the cult to find Daniel. Of course, it’s not going to be that easy…

German director Florian Gallenberger put the fact-based film together based on his own script, and shot in locations in South America, Germany and Luxembourg. It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and has a German release date set for January, but there’s no indication of a UK slot yet.

Warners Rumoured To Be Developing An Akira Trilogy

Warners Rumoured To Be Developing An Akira Trilogy

And Christopher Nolan may be involved

Akira-Runours-Nolan

Akira. The very name is probably enough to start some Warner Bros. executives weeping into their hands after years of torturous development that has so far yielded a lot of script drafts, plenty of fantasy casting and even some director interest, but no actual movies. Now – while this is strictly confined to rumour territoryDen Of Geek has heard that the studio might be going all in on the project and plotting a potential trilogy

Yes, despite all the trouble it has had getting anything in gear on the adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s genre-smashing anime, Warners has toughed it out, with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way still aboard to produce however many films do finally emerge.

The last word on the film was in June of this year, when Sons Of Anarchy veteran and current Daredevil co-showrunner Marco J. Ramirez was writing a script. And while making a trilogy – if that is truly the plan – feels a little like putting the advanced motorcycle before the horse, it’s not the most outrageous proposition in this franchise-happy era. Plus, spreading the sprawling story across three films would give the concept space to breathe.

So how does Christopher Nolan fit into all of this? There’s no word on exactly how he might be involved, though the Geek team has reportedly heard that he recently met with someone who had been attached to the film before (that list includes Jaume Collet-Serra and Albert Hughes) to talk about it. And he does have a big mystery film on Warner Bros. slate for 2017… It’s all too easy to give into speculation like that – for all we know, Nolan is simply aiming to be a producer on the project and help shepherd things through the way he did with Man Of Steel. For now, though, it’s just fun to ponder the possibilities.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Is the New Host of Celebrity Apprentice

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Celebrity Apprentice will be back - with a new host.

Arnold Schwarzenegger To Host US Celebrity Apprentice

Arnold Schwarzenegger To Host US Celebrity Apprentice

Get to da boardroom!

With Donald Trump otherwise engaged with the small matter of his bid to become President of the United States, the US version of Celebrity Apprentice was in need of a new host. And now it has one. It's Arnold Schwarzenegger. Everyone has already made the "You're Terminated" joke.

The NBC show has been running for seven seasons with Trump. Like the Comic Relief and Sport Relief editions of the UK version, it involves celebrities working in teams to win challenges, with the lacklustre getting fired until there's only one person standing. Contestants have included Gary Busey, Andrew Dice Clay, Cyndi Lauper, Lou Ferrigno (shame that wasn't in an Arnie season), Steven Baldwin and Vivica Fox, with Piers Morgan, Arsenio Hall and Poison's Brett Michaels among the winners. You don't win a job, obviously. It's all for charity.

“We are thrilled to be opening a powerful new chapter in the story of the ‘Apprentice’ franchise,” Paul Telegdy, President of Alternative and Late Night Programming at NBC Entertainment said in a statement. “Arnold Schwarzenegger is the epitome of a global brand in entertainment and business, and his accomplishments in the political arena speak for themselves. It was Arnold’s personal passion for the format that Mark Burnett and Donald Trump built over the last decade, as well as his fresh take on how to take it to new heights for today’s audiences, that made him the man to hire.”

The Celebrity Apprentice usually airs at the start of the year, so while you might rather Arnold was getting on with Legend Of Conan or Triplets (or something else), he'll presumably be starting work on the show sooner.

Simon Kinberg's Trying To Figure Out A Fantastic Four Sequel

Simon Kinberg's Trying To Figure Out A Fantastic Four Sequel

''I’d like that to happen...''

Simon-Kingberg

Of all the movies released this summer, we’re fairly certain the one no one is expecting to generate a sequel is 20th Century Fox’s latest attempt to bring the Fantastic Four to screens. But writer/producer Simon Kinberg is keeping the idea of a new film alive

“I’m really focused on the next one,” Kinberg tells MTV, while conceding that he wasn’t thrilled with the way the first one was received.  “I was obviously disappointed. I was most disappointed that fans didn’t like it. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven’t done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don’t know.”

And, according to him, it wasn’t for want of trying. “Every time you make a movie, you want to make a great movie. It’s a ton of time and effort you put in. We made that movie in the sweltering heat of summer in Baton Rouge and I was there every day of photography. It was an opportunity to do that. I do believe there is a great Fantastic Four movie to be made with that cast. So I’m gonna figure out what that is. I'd like that to happen."

The movie’s box office performance ($160.7 million worldwide and counting) wouldn’t seem to lend itself to the studio leaping on board another, but Kinberg has a lot of influence thanks to his work on the X-Men movies and, though at Disney, the Star Wars franchise. He’s hopeful the cast would return if they can get the script together and, presumably a different director (given the reports of trouble between Josh Trank and the executives), but right now it might be more wishful thinking on his part than anything else.
