New Point Break Featurette Surfs Up

New Point Break Featurette Surfs Up

'Surfing's easy. Surviving's hard.'

"We took everything we loved about the original movie and made it bigger," says one of the team. "The original one was at the level of its time and now this is at the level of this time," says another. But whatever your position on those statements or the Point Break remake in general, here's a new featurette to at least convince you that the surfing sequences are going to be damn impressive: all the better for having been done for real and captured with every filming technique possible.

The remake evolved out of an earlier plan for a sequel, in which a new agent would have been on the trail of the not-dead Bodhi, last seen suicidally surfing the world's biggest wave. What we've ended up with is "set in the world of international extreme sports" and, again involves a Fed under cover in a criminal ring. The bad guys this time aren't limiting themselves to basic bank robberies, but trying truly audacious heists that somehow necessitate big wave riding, rock climbing, dirt bikes and flight suits to carry them out.

Luke Bracey takes over the Johnny Utah role once occupied by Keanu Reeves, while Edgar Ramirez slips on the wetsuit as Bodhi, formerly played by Patrick Swayze. Orchestrating the mayhem is Ericson Core: a cinematographer, with credits on The Fast And The FuriousPayback and Daredevil. As a director, he's helmed episodes of Family Law, and decent American football feature Invincible with Mark Wahlberg.

Ray Winstone, Teresa Palmer and Delroy Lindo are among the rest of the cast, with director Core working from the screenplay by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium). Point Break is currently in post-production having shot for four months last autumn in Austria, Switzerland, Mexico, Venezuela, Tahiti, Italy, Hawaii and the USA. It's out in the UK on January 8 next year.

First Look At Angry Birds

First Look At Angry Birds

The CG animation makes its bow

A groundbreaking release in every sense, Angry Birds lands next May with the franchise-building hopes of Sony Pictures Animation pinned to it. An early showcase showed off what this, on paper, zany-sounding app-to-movie CG adaptation holds in store. This guy, basically. The most enraged of the avians, Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), is the hero of a story that's set largely on a tropical island populated by the flightless birds familiar to the game's three billion-odd downloaders.

So how has Sony and developer Rovio made sense of the simple weeeeeeeee-bang-crash gameplay in a movie context? "The question we get asked more than any other is 'Why are the birds so angry?" says producer John Cohen. "This movie is going to be the origin story of how that conflict came to exist."

The How To Train Your Pigeon-like premise has the peace-loving, naive and surprisingly mellow birds initially living in harmony - the shirty Red aside. Co-directors Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly have had fun with world, or rather nest-building. There's plenty of knowing nods - a Birds And Bees Fertility Clinic and an Early Bird Worm Shop, for instance - as we meet the main characters.

Sony has assembled a strong line-up of comic voice talent to support Sudeikis, including Bill Hader, Kate McKinnon, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Josh Gad, Keegan-Michael Key and Peter Dinklage. "We're making a comedy," stresses Cohen.

But then - look out! - the pigs arrive and seek to dupe the naive tree-critters with their wily but fairly dim ways. Feathlony ensues. Take a look at the antagonists below (they're not Amish, they're just drawn that way).

Expect a first teaser trailer for Angry Birds next week. The film is scheduled to land on these shores on May 13.

Frances McDormand Attached To Martin McDonagh's Next Film

Frances McDormand Attached To Martin McDonagh's Next Film

He hopes to make Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri next year

Frances-McDormand-Martin-McDonagh

It’s been a couple of years since In Bruges director Martin McDonagh made his follow-up, Seven Psychopaths. Since then, he’s busied himself writing and is preparing to launch a play, Hangmen, in London. But a long-gestating film project is also inching closer to being made, with Frances McDormand attached to star in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Talking with The Guardian about his work in general and the play specifically, he also makes mention of the new film.  “It’s about a 50-year-old woman whose daughter is murdered and she goes to war with the police in her home town, because she thinks they are more interested in torturing black people than getting justice.” Despite its seemingly topical subject matter, it was actually written about four years ago.

He doesn’t say anything else about the film – his mind is understandably consumed with the play for now – but it’s certainly an interesting combo. McDormand seems like she’d be a great fit for McDonagh’s smart writing, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed this all comes together.

McDormand will next be heard in Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur (out November 27) and will also show up in the Coens’ latest, Hail, Caesar!, which is set to arrive here on February 26 next year.

Oliver Stone's Snowden Moves To 2016

Oliver Stone's Snowden Moves To 2016

It won't be ready for the Oscar race

Snowden-moves-to-2016

Originally looking like it might be one to enter the awards race this year, Oliver Stone’s latest, Snowden, is now reported to be eyeing a 2016 release date instead.

Once scheduled for Christmas Day in the States, the film, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Nicolas Cage, Timothy Olyphant, Zachary Quinto and Keith Stanfield, is now moving to an unspecified berth sometime next year. Before you start wondering about conspiracy theories – this is from the man behind JFK, and tells the story of the whistleblower who took on the US government, after all – The Hollywood Reporter’s sources say it’s because the film isn’t finished yet.

Stone is still tinkering with his latest, which chronicles the experiences of Edward Snowden (Gordon-Levitt), the whistleblowing National Security Agency contractor who began leaking classified documents to former Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald in June 2013. Snowden, currently stuck in Russia after the US cancelled his passport, has become a polarising figure between those – such as the director himself – who consider him a patriotic hero, and those who feel he’s a traitor.

No UK release had been set, but chances are we would have seen the film early next year in any regard. Now it seems we’ll be waiting that much longer for it.
