Brad Bird Talks The Incredibles Sequel

Brad Bird Talks The Incredibles Sequel

''I'm probably three-quarters through the script...''

Incredibles-2-Brad-Bird-Talks

There was much excitement back in March of last year when the official word broke that Brad Bird and Team Pixar were at work on a sequel to The Incredibles. We’ve had to wait for much of an update, what with Bird busying himself making this year’s Tomorrowland, but now he has spoken to Collider about his progress on the new movie

Talking at an event for the new Signature Edition release of The Iron Giant, Bird offers that he’s working away on the script but that, as with many animated projects, the team is already taking things to the next level. “I have the story arc. I’m probably three-quarters through the script, first pass through the script, but we’re already boarding parts of it,” he says. “I’ve got a lot of people that worked on the first one working on it, so we’re all having a good time with it.”

He was naturally reluctant to reveal much in the way of plot, but he did say that he’s aware of the changed landscape in terms of superhero movies and how he plans to respond to our Marvel and DC-heavy era. “What’s changed is there were only two other superhero franchises at the time Incredibles came out. One of them was X-Men and the other was Spider-Man, and now there are 400 billion of them and there’s a new superhero movie every two weeks. What you don’t want to do is trot over the same turf in the same way everyone else is. So we’re trying to keep it focused in the area that our film was, which was a little bit more about characters and relationships and stuff like that, and see where that takes us. But we’re having a good time.”

As for when we’ll see the film? That’s also up in the air, but in a positive development, it appears things are going well. “We were originally — Incredibles was supposed to happen after Cars, and our wheels just happened to click a little earlier so they moved us up. Release dates are a little fluid when you’re making films so far in advance. Some films are tougher to come together and tough nuts to crack, and other ones comes together a little more quickly, and so I’m just going to work as fast as I can work well with a relatively small team because I like small teams better until you’ve got everything firmly figured out.”

Next up from Pixar is The Good Dinosaur, which lumbers on to our screens on November 27.

Jane Fonda And Robert Redford Starring In Our Souls At Night

Jane Fonda And Robert Redford Starring In Our Souls At Night

Netflix may back the film

Jane-Fonda-Our-Souls-At-Night

They famously worked together in the likes of Barefoot In The Park and The Electric Horseman, and have long wanted to share the screen again. So Jane Fonda and Robert Redford are planning to co-star in Our Souls At Night.

According to Deadline, Netflix is in talks to back the movie, making it the latest in its series of acquisitions along the line of Beasts Of No Nation. Redford is producing the film, and The Fault In Our Stars duo Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber are on board to adapt Kent Haruf’s novel.

The story, set in Colorado, follows Addie Moore (Fonda, if this all comes together), a widow living alone after her children have long moved away. She visits her neighbour, Louis Waters (Redford), similarly single and an old friend of Addie’s through decades of life. She wants to become more than friends, and seeks his companionship in this later stage of their lives.

Should Netflix close the deal, it will schedule a brief theatrical run before the movie ends up on its site. There’s no director yet, but with the people involved, expect the details to come together quickly. Fonda is no stranger to the streaming service, appearing on its comedy drama Grace And Frankie with Lily Tomlin. Film-wise, she has Gabriele Muccino’s Fathers And Daughters arriving on November 13 and Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth due on January 15. Redford will be seen in A Walk In The Woods (out September 18), Dan Rather biopic Truth (which just debuted in Toronto but doesn’t let have a UK release) and Disney live-action remake Pete’s Dragon landing on August 12 next year.

In addition to the usual smattering of celebrities (Chaka Khan, Gary Busey) and "celebrities" ("Vine star Hayes Grier") who sign up to dance their way to the Mirrorball trophy, the Season 21 roster for Dancing with the Stars includes two names in particular that will get people talking - for very

Things are about to get a whole lot darker -- and bloodier -- on Gotham.

The show will waste very little time dropping bodies in Season 2. In fact, the early episodes will kill off not one, but two significant characters as the show tracks the "Rise of the Villains."

First Hardcore Trailer Explodes Online

First Hardcore Trailer Explodes Online

Henry: portrait of a POV action thriller

Scoring some impressive early reactions at the Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness strand, Ilya Naishuller's Hardcore appears set to become one of the more talked-about films in the coming months thanks to its commitment to POV shooting and storytelling. Check it out below, but be aware of NSFW violence and the dangers of googling “hardcore” if you want to find out more.

While films in the past (such as Doom) and the odd, ill-fated found footage movie have dabbled with the idea, Hardcore embraces the idea of video game-style first-person shooters to tell the story of Henry (who the audience “plays” through the technique), brought back from the dead by his scientist wife Estelle (Haley Bennett) as a cyborg.

As if that isn’t enough of a bombshell, he’s soon under attack from the goons of Danila Kozlovsky’s Akan, who kidnaps Henry’s other half as part of his megalomaniacal plan. And Henry will have to get her back while battling a seemingly endless army of mercenaries through the unfamiliar city of Moscow. His only possibly ally is the quirky Jimmy (Sharlto Copley), who will try to guide him on this mission.

Writer/director/punk rocker Naishuller, whose short film Bad Motherf****r (see that below) caught the eye of Timur Bekmambetov and landed him a deal to make a movie. Hardcore is the result, and should quickly pick up interest from international distributors.

Olivia Cooke Starring In Ready Player One

Olivia Cooke Starring In Ready Player One

Steven Spielberg lands his first cast member for the book adaptation

Olivia-cooke-Ready-Player-One

With Steven Spielberg recently confirming his intention to shoot geek-tastic novel adaptation Ready Player One, he’s solidifying that by casting his first actor. Me And Earl And The Dying Girl’s Olivia Cooke is making a deal to star.

Written by Ernie Cline, the screenwriter behind Fanboys, Ready Player One follows teenager Wade Watts who likes to escape his dreary, dangerous real world by logging into Oasis, a globally networked virtual utopia where users lead idyllic alternate lives. When the game's eccentric, Steve Jobs-style billionaire creator dies, he offers up his fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Wade is pitted against powerful corporate foes and ruthless competitors who will do anything, in the Oasis and the real world, to reach the riches first. Cooke will be Sam, a Canadian blogger who goes by the handle Art3mis in Oasis and ends up joining forces with Wade.

The script started life with Cline and Eric Eason before Cline’s pal Zak Penn was hired by Warner Bros. to take a fresh pass on boiling down the sprawling tale, laden with references to classic video games, comics, movies and other pop cultural items. Spielberg has been a hunt for actors to star in the film, and Cooke won out over the likes of Elle Fanning and Lola Kirke in a recent round of tests. The director still hasn’t found his male lead yet.

As for Cooke, Me And Earl And The Dying Girl is in UK cinemas now. She’ll appear in Katie Says Goodbye and is also attached to star in The Limehouse Golem. Ready Player One, meanwhile, should be out in 2017.
