John Hurt Joins The Journey

John Hurt Joins The Journey

Freddie Highmore and Toby Stephens also aboard the political pic

John-Hurt-The-Journey

With the two leading men in place – that would be Timothy Spall as Ian Paisley and Colm Meaney as Martin McGuinness – the team behind political drama The Journey is adding cast members before starting to shoot later this month. John Hurt, Freddie Highmore and Toby Stephens are all aboard

Nick Hamm’s film chronicles the story of how two seemingly implacable enemies – Paisley, the fiery, vocal leader of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Fein’s McGuinness – had to find common ground and make history, becoming close friends in the process.

According to Screen International, Hurt will be an unnamed political fixer who sorts things behind the scenes, Highmore will be Paisley’s driver and Stephens has the highest-profile role of the new additions: he’s playing Tony Blair. Wonder if he’ll be calling Michael Sheen up for tips?

Working from a script by Colin Bateman that folds fictional elements into the real-life story, Hamm will start filming in Northern Ireland and Scotland on September 28.

Marvel's Jessica Jones Hits Netflix On November 20

Marvel's Jessica Jones Hits Netflix On November 20

Krysten Ritter is the comic book character

It feels like we’ve been waiting a long time to hear when we’ll be able to see Marvel’s Jessica Jones, the next series in the set of four launched by Daredevil this year, on Netflix. The wait, for the date at least, is over, as the streaming service has announced a November 20 launch.

Based on Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos' Alias comics run, the Marvel universe tale is focused on Jones, a woman still picking up the pieces after a short-lived stint as a superhero. Suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after using her powers (super strength, amongst others), she decides to leave the life behind. But she doesn’t entirely forsake her past: she opens up a New York detective agency, which tackles cases for both ordinary people and superheroes.

Melissa Rosenberg has been running the show on this one, which also features Mike Colter as Luke Cage (who is starting work on his own show now) David Tennant as Zebediah Kilgrave AKA “The Purple Man”, with the ability to control minds and a yen for psychopathic behaviour, plus Rachael Taylor, Carrie-Anne Moss, Erin Moriarty, Eka Darville and Wil Traval. Rosario Dawson will also appear as Claire Temple to offer some connective tissue between the shows.

We have our fingers crossed for this one – hopefully it’ll continues the high standards set by Daredevil and provides a different angle on superhero stories.

Isla Fisher Discovers Nocturnal Animals

Isla Fisher Discovers Nocturnal Animals

Joining Jake Gyllenhaal in Tom Ford's drama

With Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Armie Hammer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Michael Shannon already aboard, A Single Man’s Tom Ford is still not finished gathering the cast for his second directorial effort, Nocturnal Animals. He now has Isla Fisher joining the extensive roster.

Ford based his script on Austin Wright’s 1993 novel Tony And Susan. Split into two chunks, one part of plot follows a woman (Adams), who receives a book manuscript and a note asking for her opinion on it, sent by her ex-husband, who she left 20 years before. In the other, Gyllenhaal plays a man whose family holiday turns violent.

Taylor-Johnson is aboard to play a mysterious man who may pose a threat to Gyllenhaal’s family, while Shannon will be the detective who investigates the incident. Hammer will be Adams' current husband, and Fisher has signed up to play Gyllenhaal's wife, who travels with him and is in the car during an altercation he has that puts their family in danger.

We'll likely next see Fisher in Kevin Greutert's Blumhouse horror Visions (although it doesn't yet have a UK release date), and she's also part of Sacha Baron Cohen's Grimsby, which is out on March 4 next year. She's most recently been filming the comedy Keeping Up With The Joneses, with Gal Gadot, John Hamm and Zach Galifianakis. That one's due on April 1.

Nocturnal Animals gets underway shortly, for a release sometime next year.
