Krampus Trailer Creeps In

Krampus Trailer Creeps In

You'd better watch out...

For a film about ancient lore, Krampus is keeping to a much more modern tradition, following the release of pictures with the first trailer. Check out the initial promo for Michael Dougherty’s festive frightmare below.

The film, which stars Adam Scott, Emjay Anthony, Toni Collette, David Koechner and Fargo’s Allison Tolman, follows Max (Anthony), a kid around the age when Santa’s magic still has a grip on the imagination, but only just. When his dysfunctional family gathers for Christmas, he’s given even more reason to stop believing. As the adults squabble, Max decides that maybe it’s not worth writing to Father Christmas this year.

But then a strange blizzard and a power outage hit their neighbourhood, cutting the family off from everyone else, signalling that Krampus and his nasty hench-creatures are on their way, looking to punish those who’ve ended up on the naughty list. It’s all based on actual folklore from Europe, and appears to feature the same commitment to blending physical creatures and CG effects that Dougherty brought to Trick ‘r Treat. Krampus will haunt our cinemas on December 4.

New Trailer For Todd Haynes' Carol

New Trailer For Todd Haynes' Carol

Cate Blanchett has an affair to remember

It may not be the Vorderman biopic we’ve all been waiting for, but Todd Haynes’ Carol has an awful lot to recommend it. Greeted with awards and standing ovations at Cannes, it’s a period drama that's shaping up for a serious run at this year’s Oscars too. It has a new trailer freshly in, and you can check it out below.

Lyrical and heart-rending, this Patricia Highsmith adaptation is set amid Manhattan's frosty post-war climate. Within this social and moral cold war, two women, Rooney Mara’s shop clerk Therese Belivet and Cate Blanchett’s lovelessly married Carol, meet and fall in love. If you’ve seen Haynes’ Far From Heaven – a very different film from this one – you’ll know that liberation can come with a heavy price in ‘50s America.

Haynes’ film has been adapted from Highsmith’s only crime-free novel, The Price Of Salt, by Phyllis Nag and also boasts Jake Lacy, Sarah Paulson and Kyle Chandler in its cast. As Carol’s bitter husband, Chandler is the clear and present danger not only to Carol’s future happiness but her current competence as a mum.

Carol makes its UK bow at the BFI London Film Festival on October 14, before going out across the UK on November 27. Mark your diary.

Marcus Dunstan Discusses Halloween Returns

Marcus Dunstan Discusses Halloween Returns

'We want that Han and Chewie moment'

Back in February the news broke that Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan would finally be writing the unusually delayed next Halloween movie, Halloween Returns. In June it was confirmed that Dunstan would also direct. And now Dunstan has given a very candid interview to the bloggers at The Myers Fan about exactly what he has in mind for the franchise.

Regarding the title, Dunstan says it was supposed to have a colon, putting a different emphasis on "Returns" as a subtitle. "If you commit a violent act, sometimes you get returns," he explains. "What are the repercussions of being a violent entity? In that case, Halloween: Returns could mean a number of things."

He says he wants the film to stand alone, citing Aliens as a film he quite happily watched as a kid with no idea it was a sequel. But he also says his Halloween will follow the first original three instalments. That casued some confusion - Halloween III is a separate story that has nothing to do with Michael Myers' killing spree - until Dunstan clarified on Twitter that he was talking aesthetically. "[Directors] John Carpenter, Rick Rosenthal and Tommy Lee Wallace all brought passion and fire to the series," he believes. "Love was in the flames!" He says he'd like to shoot Halloween Returns on film.

Elsewhere in the 20-minute podcast Dunstan says he's hoping to cast Gillian Jacobs in an unspecified role: "She's known for all this comedy on Community, and yet I didn't know her from Community first; I knew her from a movie called Gardens of the Night, which is one of the most wrenching dramas, and she's excellent. I thought, 'I wonder if this great performer would do that again, would like to go there,' and I think so..."

And while he says the film will be violent, he also insists that "Michael Myers is subtlety and suspense". He references the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, which gave us a couple of old friends back in their rightful context. "We want that Han and Chewie moment."

Dunstan and Melton are the writing team behind SawIV-VII, the Feast films and Piranha 3DDHalloween Returns - the eleventh Halloween - won't be Dunstan's first gig behind the camera, however. He made his debut with The Collector in 2009, followed by its sequel The Collection in 2012.

There's still nothing officially known about the film's plot or angle, other than that it's planned as a "recalibration" of the Halloween series. Bloody Disgusting are sticking to a synopsis of unclear origin that involves two now grown-up children of Michael Myers' victims sneaking into death row to watch the slasher's execution, but finding themselves in hot water when everything goes awry and Myers, of course, escapes. That remains unconfirmed.

It's certain, of course, that Halloween Returns will involve Michael Myers on a stalk-and-slash on or around October 31. Beyond that, solid details will no doubt start emerging soon. Pre-production is underway for a release sometime next year. You'd assume Halloween, but Rob Zombie's came out on Labor Day. Go figure.

First Look Jason Bourne On The Set Of Bourne 2016

First Look Jason Bourne On The Set Of Bourne 2016

Matt Damon's in fighting shape

If you were waiting for rock solid proof – despite word of Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon returning and a flurry of recent casting – that the Jason Bourne films are really, truly back, then wait no longer. Thanks to producer Frank Marshall, we have the first image of Damon as Bourne from the set.

And Damon certainly does seem to be in lithe fighting shape – leaner and meaner than in 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum. There is still no proper plot synopsis for what the former government asset will be up to this time, though Damon has said it’ll reflect our financially risky times and is firmly set in a post-Edward Snowden world. Take that for what you will, but the last time we saw him, Bourne was doing some whistleblowing of his own, releasing the information about the illegal program codenamed Treadstone that created him and then going firmly off the grid.

With Julia Stiles back as Nicky and Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassell aboard, the new Bourne will be with us on July 29 next year.

Kevin Connolly Directing John Gotti Mob Biopic

Kevin Connolly Directing John Gotti Mob Biopic

John Travolta still set to play Gotti Sr.

First it was Nick Cassavetes, then Joe Johnston and then Barry Levinson. Now it looks like the long-developing John Gotti biopic, still set to star John Travolta, finally has its ultimate director in Kevin Connolly

Travolta has been aboard throughout the entire tortuous journey as Gotti Sr, the Gambini Family mobster convicted in 1992 of murder, extortion, racketeering, loan-sharking, illegal gambling and, just like Al Capone, tax evasion. The all-round goodfella died in prison in 2002.

His story will be viewed from the point-of-view of his son John Jr (yet to be cast) who himself wasn't unknown to the law. He served a nine-year sentence for racketeering, but insists he's now on the straight-and-narrow. That ought to be a relief to the team behind the film, on which he's a producer, having sold his "life rights". Early version were going under the moniker Three Generations, although it's unclear if that's still the case.

Connolly is best known as an actor, principally for playing Eric Murphy on Entourage. But he's been adding directing jobs to his CV for years, beginning with episodes of Entourage, Unhappily Ever After and documentary series 30 For 30. He made his feature directing debut with Gardener Of Eden in 2007, and shot the still-unreleased Dear Eleanor, starring Isabelle Fuhrman, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Jessica Alba, Luke Wilson and Josh Lucas, in 2013.

Gotti's finances are in place, Lionsgate will release the film in the US, and the project is headed to the Toronto International Film Festival to drum up foreign sales.
