Baltasar Kormákur Plans His Viking Epic

Baltasar Kormákur Plans His Viking Epic

'It's authentic, big world, masculine'

Baltasar Kormákur’s latest action-adventure, Everest, takes a host of A-listers and imperils them at the top of the world’s tallest mountain. For his next trip or two, the stakes look equally high. When Empire spoke to the Icelandic director earlier in the summer, he shared his plans for two Hollywood projects currently in the pipeline.

"I've got an oil-spill movie coming up and a Viking movie,” he revealed. “The Viking project is another big one, [and] we’re working on both scripts.” The former rekindles an idea that Kormákur was forced to abandon in pre-production when Mel Gibson’s ultimately-abortive movie was announced. "I had this project ten years ago, when Lord Of The Rings and all these things were coming out,” he rues. "I made this Viking story and I got the biggest support from the Iceland Film Fund, but I realised I couldn't really create the world I wanted. I could only make a small version of it. [Mel Gibson's version] really fucked me up, you know? Because I was no Mel Gibson, put it that way.”

While Gibson’s Viking yarn has fallen by the wayside, Kormákur’s version promises some of the crunching action beats that have hallmarked his peer’s historical epics. "My pitch was, in a way, to make a modern version of a Mel Gibson film,” Kormákur explains. "Authentic, big world, masculine.” The Kormákur version will, he stresses, be in English. “There's no such thing [as the Viking language]. You can do it in old Icelandic or old Norwegian, but if you try to have American actors speaking old Icelandic, it's going to sound really, really weird."

"My intention is to create a world you haven't seen,” he adds. "If you go into the British Museum, you'll see [Vikings] were not drunk rapists. They were actually really good at creating jewellery... the best boats of the era. I know that Hollywood doesn't go to a place like that unless it's forced, but it's fascinating to create that world.”

Everest, meanwhile, hits cinemas on September 18 with Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright and Sam Worthington in tow.

Luca Guadagnino Discusses Suspiria Remake

Luca Guadagnino Discusses Suspiria Remake

Bigger Splash director on his Argento appropriation

Last we heard, back in 2012, David Gordon Green (Prince Avalanche, Joe) was attached to direct the controversial remake of Dario Argento's Suspiria. Just this week, however, the news has arrived that Green's iteration of the project is definitively off the table, with Luca Guadagnino now in the frame to deliver his own take. At Venice with his crime drama A Bigger Splash, Guadagnino shared some of his thoughts.

"The film by Dario Argento was a very indicative moment of growing up for me because I saw it when I was 14," the director tells Empire. "I think it changed me forever. I was obsessed [with Argento] through all my adolescence. [My version] is going to be set in Berlin in 1977. It’s going to be about the mother and the concept of motherhood and about the uncompromising force of motherhood. It’s going to be about finding your inner voice – the title is very evocative on these grounds."

Argento's 1977 original involves Jessica Harper's Suzy, who arrives in Freiburg to attend a renowned ballet academy, only to discover that it's a front for a powerful coven of witches. It marked the beginning of the director's Three Mothers trilogy, followed by Inferno (1980) and The Mother Of Tears (2007).

Guadagnino's version, he says, will be "very different. The movie by Dario Argento was maybe a child of its own times. It's very delicate; almost childish. I have a very strong interest in German literature and film, so I think [my] Suspiria will have to focus very strongly on that moment in history, in 1977, when Germany was divided and a new generation was claiming and asking to recognise the debt of guilt that forged the new Germany after the war against the fathers who wanted to deny the responsibility."

Locations and casting have yet to be worked out, but the director does clarify that the previously announced Isabelle Huppert and Isabelle Fuhrman are no longer linked to the project. "That was for a version by David Gordon Green," he says. "That’s not the case for me. I can’t say anything about the casting right now. I will announce very soon."

Guadagnino's A Bigger Splash, starring Dakota Johnson, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes and a silent Tilda Swinton, plays at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9, and is out in the rest of the UK on February 12 next year.

Selena Gomez Set For Bad Neighbors 2

Selena Gomez Set For Bad Neighbors 2

Playing Chloë Grace Moretz's sorority rival

Having previously been a Spring Breaker, Selena Gomez has now progressed to sorority girl, joining the cast of Bad Neighbors 2 to cause more trouble for Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne.

The new film, currently subtitled Sorority Rising, reunites Rogen and Byrne as Mac and Kelly Radner, who in the first movie had to deal with the loud, obnoxious frat brotherhood (led by Zac Efron’s Teddy) that moved in next door.

A prank war quickly escalated, though there was something of an understanding between Mac and the finally graduated Teddy by the end. And he’ll come in useful when an even worse crowd, led by Chloë Moretz, takes over the house next door in the sequel. Gomez reportedly plays a pretender to Moretz's throne. Catfight!

Original director Nicholas Stoller is back for this one, and he’s also a writer this time alongside Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, who wrote the first pic.

Dave Franco and Carla Gallo constitute yet more returning cast, with Kiersey Clemons and Beanie Feldstein also among the newbies.

Shooting has been underway for a couple of weeks, and Bad Neighbors 2 should be out on May 6 next year.

Sam Smith To Sing The Spectre Theme

Sam Smith To Sing The Spectre Theme

Writing's On The Wall for the British singer-songwriter

There was talk of Ellie Goulding or Radiohead, but neither has turned out to be performing the new Bond theme. Sam Smith has announced this morning that he's got the Spectre gig. The titles will roll to a song called 'Writing's On The Wall'.

Smith will be the first British male solo artist to nab a Bond theme since Tom Jones did Thunderball in 1965. "This is one of the highlights of my career," says Smith. "I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it."

Bookies William Hill got suspicious a couple of months ago and withdrew the betting when someone put a whopping £15k on Radiohead. "Nobody puts £15k on a hunch," they said. So what was all that about?

Singer-songwriter Smith won the 2014 BRIT Critic's Choice Award and the BBC's Sound Of 2014 poll, and released his debut album, In The Lonely Hour, in May last year. He was nominated for six Grammys this year and won four. "Writing's On The Wall" is co-written with his regular collaborator Jimmy Napes.

Expect the song online shortly; we'll post it when it arrives. Its official release date is September 25. Spectre is out on October 26. For everything we know about it so far, check out Empire's essential briefing.
