Danny Boyle Updates On Trainspotting 2

Danny Boyle Updates On Trainspotting 2

'All the four main actors want to come back...'

Out on the festival rounds for his Steve Jobs biopic, Danny Boyle has been fielding questions about the long-mooted Trainspotting sequel. Tantalisingly, it's closer to happening than it's ever been. The script, by original screenwriter John Hodge, is "terrific", and, Boyle tells Deadline at Telluride, "All the four main actors want to come back and do it."

Trainspotting 2 already exists, of course, in the form of Irvine Welsh's 2002 novel Porno, which picks up the principals a decade on. Renton is running a nightclub in Amsterdam; Begbie is just out of jail and on the warpath towards whoever was anonymously sending him all the gay porn; Sick Boy is mining a new vein of "adult" entertainment; and Spud is contemplating both suicide and a history of Leith.

It's a different beast to Trainspotting, not least because it seems to be a sequel to the film rather than the novel. "It's not a great book," conceded Boyle way back in 2010, "in the way that Trainspotting is genuinely a masterpiece. But we've been doing some work on it, and it's got potential, for sure. When the moment's right, I think we will approach it."

Now that moment appears to be arriving. Hodge's screenplay - still based on Porno - is complete, and Boyle says he intends it to be his next film. "Now it's only a matter of getting all [the actors'] schedules together," says the director, "which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.” Johnny Lee Miller (Sick Boy) remains busy with Elementary, and Robert Carlyle (Begbie) is a regular on Once Upon A Time.

While you're waiting for Trainspotting 2 to pull into the station, Steve Jobs is out in the UK on November 13. It plays at the BFI London Film Festival on October 18.

Benicio Del Toro Confirms Casting In Star Wars: Episode VIII

Benicio Del Toro Confirms Casting In Star Wars: Episode VIII

'I'm like the villain, but we'll see...'

Update: It's official! Benicio Del Toro has moved from "I think it might happen" to official cast member of Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII. "Star Wars is coming up," he told Spanish news site Rac1, " so we'll see how that turns out. I think we start shooting in March". He then added, rather mysteriously, "I'm like the villain, but we'll see..."

He’s already spent time in space thanks to his relatively small role as The Collector in Guardians Of The Galaxy. But if The Wrap’s report turns out to be true and he makes an actual deal, he could be headed to the most famous intergalactic destination in Disney’s current line-up, as the company wants him to play a villain in Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Rian Johnson is writing and directing the second of the new trilogy films. Somewhat naturally, little is known about the film beyond the fact that it should continue the story begun in J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII. And while it appears the Star Wars team wants him to bring some menace to the screen, the other details about Del Toro’s potential role, assuming he decides to take on the job at all, remain behind defensive shields. So for now, this one has to sit under the giant, hooting Rumour Alert Klaxon.

What we do know is that Episode VIII is scheduled to start shooting early next year ready for a May 6, 2017 release date. Del Toro will next be seen in drug war thriller Sicario, out here on October 9, and Terrence Malick’s as-yet-untitled film set against the music scene in Austin, Texas, which should be on screens in 2016. Begun, the many jokes about "he's Khan in the film!!!! LOL!!!!" have.

Barry Sonnenfeld To Direct A Series Of Unfortunate Events

Barry Sonnenfeld To Direct A Series Of Unfortunate Events

Lemony Snicket meets an old friend on Netflix

The veil of mystery covering Netflix's new Series Of Unfortunate Events has just parted somewhat, with the news that Barry Sonnenfeld will be directing. He's signed up alongside Mark Hudis (True Blood), who'll be executive producer and showrunner.

Netflix announced the show, based on Lemony Snicket's set of 13 unlucky kids' novels, last November, but until now very little has been revealed about the shape it's taking (the trailer at the bottom of this page mysteriously appeared a couple of months ago, but turned out to be fan-made and unofficial).

Sonnenfeld is a former Coen Brothers alumnus who went on to direct the Men In Black trilogy and, perhaps more relevantly here, both Addams Family films. His macabre sensibility makes him the perfect choice for the series, and he already has a history with Snicket, having originally been tapped to direct the 2004 film with Jim Carrey. He developed a screenplay for that version with Snicket's real-life alter-ego Daniel Handler, but left the project over budgetary arguments with Paramount (Brad Silberling took it over). Looks like he's relishing the opportunity for a second crack of the whip.

“On the search for fantastic material that appeals to both parents and kids, the first stop for generations of readers is A Series Of Unfortunate Events,” Netflix’s Cindy Holland said last year. “The world created by Lemony Snicket is unique, darkly funny, and relatable. We can’t wait to bring it to life for Netflix members.”

Snicket isn’t so sure. “I can’t believe it,” he said, from an undisclosed location. “After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books.”

Sonnenfeld is currently at work on the cat comedy Nine Lives, starring Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Garner and Christopher Walken. That's due out next year, and the new Series Of Unfortunate Events will also cast its leaden pall on Netflix sometime - probably later on - in 2016.

New Leatherface Poster Steps Online

New Leatherface Poster Steps Online

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre begins again

Nine years ago Jonathan Liebesman directed The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. Now that prequel to the remake is being overwritten by another Texas Chainsaw origin story. Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo are behind the cameras this time, and the first poster for Leatherface has just arrived. Reflect on it below.

Like Liebesman's film, the new Leatherface is following the hulking killer's early years in the 1970s, although in this case we'll find him in his teens before he dons the mask and picks up the saw. The hook for the plot is Leatherface escaping from a mental institution along with three other inmates, dragging a kidnapped nurse along with them for "the road trip from Hell".

Sam Strike, Sam Coleman, James Bloor and Jessica Madsen are the escapees, with Vanessa Grasse the nurse. Stephen Dorff plays the deranged Texas lawman chasing them, and Lili Taylor is Leatherface's mom, Vera Sawyer.

The producing roster (Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, Carl Mazzocone, Avi Lerner) is the same as 2013's awful rebootquel Texas Chainsaw 3D. But Maury and Bustillo previously directed Inside, which makes Leatherface a more interesting prospect than it might have been. The up-and-coming Seth M. Sherwood wrote the screenplay, and the eighth Texas Chainsaw is now at the post-production stage for an expected release next year.
