Hugh Bonneville Enters Viceroy's House

Hugh Bonneville Enters Viceroy's House

In Gurinder Chadha's Mountbatten biopic

Making the journey from Downton to Delhi, Hugh Bonneville is set to star as Lord Mountbatten in the historical drama Viceroy's House. Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham, Bride And Prejudice) is directing, with Gillian Anderson, Michael Gambon, Lily Travers, Neeraj Kabi, Denzil Smith and Om Puri among the rest of the considerable cast.

The film deals with the six months in 1947 during which Mountbatten assumed the post of the last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people as Britain relinquished its colonial hold. "Mountbatten lived upstairs [at the Viceroy's house in Delhi] together with his wife and daughter," reads the press release. "Downstairs lived their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants. Against this turbulent backdrop, the personal and the political became deeply entwined and a decision was made that reverberates to this day."

Chadha co-wrote the screenplay with her husband Paul Mayeda Berges and Moira Buffini (Tamara Drew, Byzantium). Chadha and Berges are also producing along with Deepak Nayar. The production has been set up between Pathe, Reliance Entertainment, BBC Films, Ingenious and the BFI.

Anderson is playing Lady Mountbatten, with Kabi as Mahatma Gandhi and Smith as Muhammed Al Jinnah. Shooting began on August 30, for an expected release sometime in 2016.

Tatiana Maslany Is A Contender For Star Wars: Episode VIII

Tatiana Maslany Is A Contender For Star Wars: Episode VIII

Olivia Cooke and Gina Rodriguez also in the casting mix

Director Rian Johnson is still in the middle of the auditioning process for Star Wars: Episode VIII. Bear in mind then that none of the following people actually has a job yet and that this is one of those vaguely annoying "casting shortlist" non-stories. But should you be interested in some possible contenders for an as-yet unknown character (or characters), reports this morning are that Gina Rodriguez, Tatiana Maslany and Olivia Cooke all have appointments for a "chemistry read" with John Boyega.

Sources are referring to the role in question as the "female lead", although you'd have thought Episode VIII already had that in Daisy Ridley. So this is possibly another female lead or some sort of secondary role. Of the three names, Orphan Black's Maslany is intriguing, since she reportedly previously just missed out on the Rogue One role that went to Felicity Jones. Maybe the second time's the charm here.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, won a Golden Globe for her work as The CW's Jane The Virgin, and is about to co-star in Peter Berg's Deepwater Horizon with Mark Wahlberg. And Cooke is a Bates Motel regular and was just in Alfonso Gomez-Rejon's excellent Me And Earl And The Dying Girl. The Wrap's sources suggest she's also on another shortlist for Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, along with Elle Fanning and Lola Kirke.

Johnson is writing and directing the second of the new Star Wars trilogy films, and Benicio Del Toro has been the subject of some other, villain-centric casting speculationEpisode VIII is scheduled to start shooting early next year ready for a May 6, 2017 release date.

Scott Eastwood Hitches A Ride With Overdrive

Scott Eastwood Hitches A Ride With Overdrive

Long-idling car thriller looks to hit a higher gear

Scott-Eastwood-Overdrive

Sitting in the development garage since at least 2011, action project Overdrive has hardly lived up to its name so far, generating a lot of interest without actually gaining any momentum. Producer Pierre Morel and director Antonio Negret are hoping that will change now they have The Longest Ride’s Scott Eastwood on board to star.

Assuming everything comes together this time, the film, written by Wanted’s Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, focuses on two American brothers who decide to push their car-thief career into top gear by heading to France. But they end up running afoul of a much more dangerous criminal.

In its long road to the screen, the film has attracted several variations of the sibling duo with Alex Pettyfer and Matthew Goode, Karl Urban and Ben Barnes and Jamie Bell and Garrett Hedlund all loosely attached at one time or another, with the film passing through the hands of at least one studio.

Now Morel and Negret are looking for new deals, touting the fact they have Eastwood on board at the Toronto Film Festival. The actor, who also had a small role in Fury, will be seen in Oliver Stone’s Snowden and as part of the sprawling cast for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, which is out here on August 5 next year.
