Dope Trailer Drops Online

Dope Trailer Drops Online

From geek to streets

If Dope had any more buzz around it, it’d have the Rock riding on the back of it, Journey 2-style. It was a hit with critics at Sundance and is moseying over to this part of the world next month. To spread those bee-sounds a little further, it has a new trailer to share with its UK audience. Click below to do the do.

The film sees three self-professed geeks, aspiring college students and inseparable pals – Malcolm (Shameik Moore), Jib (The Grand Budapest Hotel's Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) – fall in with a new and potentially scary high-school party scene. Here, though, like Superbad meets Blood Simple, there’s the added jeopardy of a sack of drugs they unwittingly end up in possession of. Here’s hoping none of them have seen Shallow Grave.

Dope is also notable for its terrific score and the acting debut of rapper A$AP Rocky. He plays a cheery gangster called Dom who’s on hand when a drug deal goes south and the three friends are left in possession of enough product to populate an entire season of The Wire. Expect more funnies than thrills, judging by the early word and this promo.

Writer/director Rick Famuyiwa is a grad of the illustrious SoCal school that spawned the likes of Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell and George Lucas. Expect to hear a lot more about him in the future. Catch his latest when Dope lands in UK cinemas on September 4.

Netflix's Sens8 Scores Second Season

Netflix's Sens8 Scores Second Season

The Sensates will be back for more global mind connections

As you may know if you watched the first season, the birthday of the eight linked characters on Netflix’s drama Sens8 is a pivotal moment in the plot. So it seems appropriate that the streaming service took that date – August 8 – to announce that the show had been renewed for a second batch of episodes.

Originally created by Lana and Andy Wachowski and sci-fi stalwart J. Michael Straczynski, Sens8 chronicled eight connected characters, known as Sensates, from all over the world who had to figure out this mysterious link between their minds and what it meant for them and the future of humanity. And manage all that while also dealing with their own personal dramas and battling a nefarious force looking to do them harm.

With Brian J. Smith, Tuppence Middleton, Jamie Clayton, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Tina Desai, Doona Bae, Aml Ameen and Max Riemelt as the main cast, the second season promises to explore their connection even more deeply, and follows what happens now that they’ve truly come into their bond. But of course, their enemies have not gone away either… The new episodes should be shooting this year and the show will likely return to Netflix next March, if the company keeps to the same release pattern.

New Legend Poster Arrives

New Legend Poster Arrives

The Hardy Boys rule over London

Providing good value in cinematic acting ability, Legend offers a two-for-one deal on Tom Hardy, as he plays both halves of nefarious criminal sibling duo Ronnie and Reggie Kray. The new poster, showing the brothers dominating the London skyline,  is online for your Hardification purposes.

Legend-Skyline-poster

For a time in the ‘50s and ‘60s, Ronnie and Reggie ruled East London with fists, pistols and pure, simple intimidation. Their gang, the unimaginatively-named but viciously effective The Firm, took control of the shadowy underworld and carried out armed robberies, arson, racketeering, assaults and murder.

LA Confidential’s Brian Helgeland is piloting us through this crime arena. Legend dips into the dark underbelly of the swinging ‘60s, when sharp-suited gangsters warred for turf and control, and innocent people were caught in the middle of the conflict, although criminals like Ronald and Reginald Kray liked to claim they only went after the competition.

Emily Browning, David Thewlis, Christopher Eccleston, Taron Egerton, Tara Fitzgerald and Chazz Palminteri fill out the main cast for the film, with Legend arriving September 9.

Latest Star Wars: The Force Awakens TV Spot

Latest Star Wars: The Force Awakens TV Spot

With some fresh footage snippets

Star Wars, and its current instalment, the J.J. Abrams-directed Force Awakens, didn’t bring much in the way of new footage to Comic-Con this year. We can expect to see at least something more at Disney’s own biennial event, D23, scheduled for this coming weekend. Until then, enjoy a new TV spot for the movie, released by Lucasfilm in Korea.

The Force Awakens, for the three people reading this who have no idea what it might be about, is set 30 years after the events of Return Of The Jedi. Though it took a considerable drubbing at the battle of Endor, the Empire – at least in some form – is not completely gone, with a Dark Side-loyal legion known as the First Order coming to prominence. Which means, of course, that the likes of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), R2D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) will once again be facing down the new threat.

But there are also the new characters who factor in, including Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega). A lot of the film is still under wraps, but we may learn something more when Disney brings its presentation to Anaheim in a few days. Until then, enjoy unpacking the new fragments of scenes…

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be out here on December 18.
