Ready For Pez: The Movie?

Ready For Pez: The Movie?

Sweets going scripted

Pez-movie-planned

Oh, The Lego Movie… What hath though wrought upon us? While we loved the adventures of Emmet and the rest, it has opened the doors to every other commercial touchstone and idea to flood into the film market. There’s already an Emoji movie in the works and now the company behind Pez sweets is looking to get a piece of that action.

The venerable 88-year-old candy company, provider of those little fizzy sweets dispensed from the ratcheting heads of a variety of heads ranging from nature and people to superheroes and other pop cultural icons, has hatched a deal with Envision Media Arts to develop a film based on the plastic gadgets and their sugary torpedoes.

Cameron Fay, who has graduated from writing and directing short films to co-scripting Bill Pullman/Rita Wilson-starring indie comedy Brother In Laws, is attached to crank out the words for this one. Quite what the story will be is being kept quiet, and how many of their more famous icons they’ll be able to use in an actual film is a matter for the rights lawyers, but Envision CEO Lee Nelson seemed to think they're on to something. “Pez Candy is beloved by children and adults alike, with Cameron Fay we’ve created a world unique to Pez and a story that will touch the hearts of many,” he said in a statement carried by The Wrap. Expect this one… Well, when they’ve finished it. Possible strap line: "Here comes the eye candy!" We'll take that cheque, please...

New Trailer For The Intern

New Trailer For The Intern

Robert De Niro goes back to work

The idea of older people going back to work – some by necessity, others to combat boredom in retirement – has become a big trend, and it’s something that writer/director Nancy Meyers is capitalizing on for The Intern, which just put out its full trailer.

Robert De Niro stars in this one as Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old, retired widower whose life after work and wife is stifling. Nothing seems to fill the void in his days, so Ben, who was somewhat of a business whizz, decides to re-enter the job market as an intern. Which is where Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway) comes in. She’s busy running her own company, which has soared from its small beginnings just a year or two ago into a beast of a fashion site that employs more than 200 people.

And while Ben might seem out of place in the trendy office full of younglings, he quickly forms a friendly bond with Jules, as she navigates the various peaks and valleys of her own career. It all comes across as good natured, and while we doubt there will be much of a surprise in terms of plot, the banter and chemistry between De Niro and his younger co-stars is undeniable.

With Rene Russo, Andrew Rannells, Adam DeVine, Nat Wolff, Anders Holm and Reid Scott also clocking in, The Intern will be out on October 2.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation Tops The US Box Office

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation Tops The US Box Office

Cruise scales the charts, Vacation gets parked

Tom Cruise has already been talking up a sixth instalment to the Mission: Impossible franchise and it’s easy to see why. This weekend saw Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation open impressively with a $56 million domestic haul and a spot at top of the US box office for its star to cling to. Those numbers put Ghost Protocol ($29 million) and Mission: Impossible III ($47 million) in the shade.

It shows that, despite rumours of his demise as a A-list force, Cruise still has pulling power with US audiences and vindicates the decision to yank the film out of its late-year slot and into a relatively quiet summer weekend.

If all that overtime by Christopher McQuarrie and co paid off, it was a different tale for Warner Bros. and its half-baked Vacation retread. Panned by critics, the comedy hauled in a disappointing $14.8 million, a chasm between first and second places wide enough for even Ethan Hunt to think twice about leaping it. Adam Sandler and Christopher Columbus’ arcade invasion flick Pixels was the weekend’s other major casualty. Its $10.4 million left it languishing in fourth place like Donkey Kong with simian flu.

Ahead of it in third came Ant-Man with $12.6 million. Three weekends in and it’s accrued $132 million in America, a more than respectable figure without touching the surprising heights of its Marvel stablemate, Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Those yellow wee'un-delighters, Minions took fourth with $10.4 million while Amy Schumer/ Judd Apatow comedy Trainwreck boozed, partied and romanced to $9.7 million in sixth.

Jake Gyllenhaal boxing drama Southpaw, perhaps recipient of negative word of mouth, dropped to seventh with $7.5 million, with Paper Towns ($4.6 million) and Inside Out ($4.5 million) taking eighth and ninth places. There was still life the old dinos as Jurassic World picked up $3.8 million to add to its colossal $1.5 billion global takings.
