Live-Action Naruto Developing At Lionsgate

Live-Action Naruto Developing At Lionsgate

FX man Michael Gracey set to direct

Western, English-language, live-action adaptations of Japanese manga haven't so far fared terribly well. Things like Fist Of The North Star and Dragonball: Evolution are probably best forgotten, while Akira can't catch a break, talk of a Shane Black Death Note went nowhere until Adam Wingard picked it up recently, and we haven't even heard much about Dreamworks' Ghost In The Shell lately. Nevertheless, the vast Naruto franchise is the latest to enter American development, with Lionsgate negotiating for the film rights, and Michael Gracey in the frame to direct.

First published in 1997, Masahashi Kishimoto's Naruto currently stretches to 72 volumes of manga and 220 anime episodes. Not including spin-offs like the ten anime movies. The manga has more than 200 million copies in print, and is the third best-selling in history, after One Piece and Dragon Ball.

Obviously the story is far too vast to summarise quickly, but the basic premise revolves around the adolescent Naruto Uzumaki, who dreams of becoming his community's leader and ninja protector.

Avi and Ari Arad (late of Sony's Spider-Man franchise, along with many other pre-Marvel Studios Marvel properties) are producing through their Arad Productions banner, with Erik Feig, Geoff Shaveitz and Kelly O’Malley overseeing for Lionsgate. Gracey is a visual effects man turned director. He's yet to make his debut in his new career, but has been attached to Daughter Of Smoke And Bone and the Jim Henson biopic The Muppet Man.

Very early days yet, and as we said, live-action manga has, to date, not had a strong track record in Hollywood. But we will, of course, keep you posted.

Trailer For The Little Prince Flies Online

Trailer For The Little Prince Flies Online

Jeff Bridges learns what the fox says

First published in 1943, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's much-loved children's tale Le Petit Prince has been adapted several times: including as a live-action version in 1974 and a recent French TV cartoon series. Now here's the trailer for the latest iteration, with Kung Fu Panda's Mar Osborne directing, and Jeff Bridges, James Franco, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Benicio Del Toro, Mackenzie Foy, Ricky Gervais, Albert Brooks and Paul Giamatti leading the voice cast.

Saint-Exupéry's plot sees a pilot crashing in the Sahara desert and meeting a young boy who claims to be a prince fallen to Earth from an asteroid. The Prince regales the Pilot with tales of other asteroids, narrow-minded adults, a fox, a rose and more.

As you'll have seen, the trailer reveals another layer to that narrative in Osborne's version, with the Pilot recounting his strange tale to an audience of one: a young girl with a high-achieving mother. We're liking the different animation styles between the girl's strand and the Prince's.

Irena Brignull (The Boxtrolls) and Bob Persichetti (Puss In Boots) wrote the screenplay, and The Little Prince stems from the indie Onyx Films, taking on the corporate might of your Pixars and Sonys with, it looks like, considerable panache. The film rolls out in various territories between now and December, so expect it in the UK before the end of the year.

First Teaser Trailer For Zoolander 2 Arrives

First Teaser Trailer For Zoolander 2 Arrives

The film will need to be at least three time longer

Dust off your Le Tigre because Derek Zoolander is back, back, back. Should you have missed the news thus far, Zoolander 2 is happening, once again directed by and starring Ben Stiller as the cerebrally-challenged male model. You won't learn any potential plot details from this first teaser trailer, but you will hear someone that sounds a lot like Stephen Hawking putting the catwalk king into a cosmic context. Click on the ZooTube link below for a brief history of Derek.

Of course, it's been a few years since Derek Zoolander was busy foiling Mugatu's foul schemes, dominating the fashion scene and advertising Aveda ("the essence of wetness") as a merman. Times have changed, his stock has fallen but he's not less blinderingly lacking in self-awareness. Or dim. "Two Hundred Lander?" he gasps of the trailer's 2oolander logo. "No, Derek, it's just a pun," replies kinda-Hawking.

Zoolander 2 is set roughly 14 years after the original, and finds Derek and best pal Hansel (Owen Wilson) trying to deal with a world that has seemingly moved on past them. Their lives have changed – not always for the better – and they’re not best pleased.

Stiller is once again directing, working from a script by Justin Theroux. The film has been shooting in Rome and features the return of Wilson, Christine Taylor and Will Ferrell’s Mugatu, while also introducing characters played by Kristen Wiig and Penelope Cruz, with Cyrus Arnold as Derek Junior. Zoolander 2 is targeting a February 12, 2016 release.

'Rowdy' Roddy Piper 1954-2015

'Rowdy' Roddy Piper 1954-2015

Wrestler-turned-actor dies, aged 61

Roderick Toombs, better known by his stage-name 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper has died at his home in Hollywood. The 61-year-old reportedly suffered a heart attack in his sleep.

Born in Saskatchewan and raised in Manitoba, Piper was expelled from junior high school for carrying a switchblade: an event that didn't sit well with his father, who was a Mountie. Leaving home early, he drifted into odd jobs at gyms, becoming an amateur boxer and wrestler before taking up the latter professionally at the age of 15. He quickly rose to fame, first for the National Wrestling Alliance, followed by the WCW and eventually the WWE. There were many awards, including "Best Heel" and "Most Hated Wrestler". People love a villain.

Given his big personality, a move into movies was a no-brainer. He made his screen debut in an uncredited bit-part in Carl Reiner's The One And Only in 1978. A handful of roles later, he scored his first lead in the bonkers cult action sci-fi Hell Comes To Frogtown. PIper played Sam Hell, one of the last fertile men on Earth, wanted by the government for breeding, but first having to mount a rescue of some women kdnapped by giant frogs.

And then, of course, there was John Carpenter's They Live, in which Piper came to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and found has was all out of the former.

He never reached that giddy height again, but continued to make films for the rest of his life: cheap quickies like No Contest, Terminal Rush, Jack Of Hearts, The Reconciler... He also did a bit of voice acting (a Green Lantern cartoon, the videogame Saint's Row IV), and made TV appearances in the likes of Zorro, Walker Texas Ranger, Highlander, RoboCop, The Outer Limits and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Apparently busy recently, he has four so-far unreleased films listed as being in post-production on his IMDb page, including horror film The Chair, and something called The Green Fairy in which he played Oscar Wilde. So that's certainly one to watch out for.

Piper is survived by his wife, Kitty, their four children, and four grandchildren. "He was one of the most entertaining, controversial and bombastic performers ever in WWE," said that organisation's Vince McMahon, "beloved by millions of fans around the world."

"Devastated to hear the news of my friend Roddy Piper’s passing today," said Carpenter. "He was a great wrestler, a masterful entertainer and a good friend."

Ian McShane Plays Game of Thrones

Ian McShane Plays Game of Thrones

In a secret but 'important' role

A decade on from Deadwood, Ian McShane is returning to HBO for another turn in a flagship show. He's joining the cast of Game Of Thrones' sixth season, in an as-yet unspecified but apparently significant role.

Thrones is now entering particularly mysterious territory. The series has - controversially for some - already made some significant changes from George RR Martin's novels in the process of adaptation. But the next series will be the first to move beyond Martin's books completely.

[Possible spoilers, for a given value of 'spoilers']. So McShane could be playing a completely new character we haven't yet met at all in the source. Internet scuttlebut, however - and remember this is just gossip - has him pegged as Randyll Tarly, the stern father of Sam. Tarly is supposed to have been the only man to ever defeat Robert Baratheon, and, in the books, throws his weight behind the beleaguered House Tyrell.

Again, that has not been confirmed by HBO, and the only thing EW's secret sources have turned up is that McShane's role will be of "key importance" despite not having a huge amount of screen time.

Game Of Thrones Season 6 is aiming for a Spring 2016 release, and starts shooting soon. For a bit more chat, have a look at our report from last month's Comic-Con panel.

Channing Tatum Officially Cast As Gambit

Channing Tatum Officially Cast As Gambit

His X-deal is finally done

Channing-Tatum-Reveals-His-Gambit-Hopes

While he's been "attached" forever, Channing Tatum had yet to sign any pieces of paper tying him to the role of the X-Men's Gambit in Fox's attempt to kick off a refreshed X-Universe. You may have seen some tittle-tattle in the last week or so that he wasn't going to be doing it after all, but all that's now been consigned to the gossip dustbin. Tatum has now closed his Gambit deal, meaning he'll don the purple threads and wield the playing cards for director Rupert Wyatt as planned.

Tatum has been personally invested in Gambit for ages. "I’ve been pretty vocal about wanting to be the part of Gambit for a very long time," he told MTV a year ago. "It’s a weird, pinching-myself moment that we’re even having the conversation.”

If there were kinks in the negotiations, they perhaps revolved around the extent of his commitment, and his recompense for such. If Fox are looking for a character to fill the gap Wolverine will leave when Hugh Jackman retires from the role in 2017, Tatum could be staring down more than a decade playing Remy LeBeau.

There's also the question of where and how Gambit will fit into Fox's renegade Marvel universe, after Tatum stood firm about not making a cameo in X-Men: Apocalypse ("No, I definitely will not," he told Reddit).

"We’ve talked about Gambit being a standalone first," said Tatum, again last summer, "and actually trying to change the 'hero' superhero movie. Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the grey. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other [X-Men movies].”

Gambit, which has a screenplay by Josh Zetumer (RoboCop), currently has a UK release date of October 7 next year. Which seems like a very tight schedule. X-Men: Apocalypse - definitely minus Gambit - is out on May 18.
