Hugh Jackman Confirms That Wolverine 3 Is His Last

Hugh Jackman Confirms That Wolverine 3 Is His Last

Nine movies and out!

It's been a long road, but as was much suspected and hinted at, Hugh Jackman has finally confirmed outright that the third solo Wolverine movie will be his last outing as the adamantium-clawed mutant.

"This will be my last one,” he told Australian talkshow host Dr. Oz. “It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years! I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it. I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out."

Jackman had previously posted an Instagram post with the caption "one last time". That was something of a clue too.

Nothing is yet known about the new Wolverine’s plot, though director James Mangold and Jackman have been swapping ideas and Michael Green has been converting them to screenplay form.

All involved will want to make sure this is a solid swansong for the actor’s unprecedented stint as James "Logan" Howlett. He made his debut in 2000 in X-Men, and continued through X2, The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, First Class (in a striking cameo), The Wolverine, and Days Of Future Past. It's currently unclear (possibly being kept top secret) if he's part of the currently shooting X-Men: Apocalypse, which is out on May 19, 2016. The as-yet-untitled third solo Wolverine currently has a release date of March 2, 2017.

The question this raises, of course, is how the X-universe will fare without Jackman. Will Logan be put out to grass or re-cast as quickly as possible. The fanboy campaigns for a shorter and hairier replacement begin now...

Podcast #160: Kit Harington, Peter Firth, Jon Stewart

Podcast #160: Kit Harington, Peter Firth, Jon Stewart

Kinda spooky

Jon Stewart, the legendary host of your favourite American news satire television program The Daily Show, is on this week's podcast to chat about his directorial debut, Rosewater, as well as The Winslow Boy, John Oliver, and much more besides. Also on this particular episode are Spooks: The Greater Good's Peter Firth and Kit Harington (see above), who talk horses, running up walls and surviving the Oscars.

In the non-interview section of the podcast, the team talk Martin Freeman's unexpected casting as Spider-Man - okay, not really - as well as which singing in a car scenes are the best.

Toby Stephens Spending 13 Hours With Michael Bay

Toby Stephens Spending 13 Hours With Michael Bay

Joins cast of Benghazi drama

toby-stephens-13-hours

Opting not to take a holiday between seasons of Black Sails, Toby Stephens has signed on for Michael Bay's Benghazi-set thriller 13 Days. He joins a cast that already includes John Krasinski, James Badge Dale, Max Martini, Freddie Froma and Pablo Schreiber.

Written by Chuck Hogan, the script adapts Mitchell Zuckoff’s book 13 Hours: The Inside Account Of What Really Happened In Benghazi. The focus is on six members of a security team who fought to defend the US State Department special mission compound in Libya when terrorists attacked it on the eleventh anniversary of 9/11. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and one of the compound’s workers died in the initial assault and two contractors were killed during another attack on a nearby CIA facility.

Stephens will be playing Glen "Bub" Doherty, a Global Response Staff officer in Tripoli and a close friend of Krasinski's Navy SEAL.

Outside of high-seas piracy on the Starz channel, Stephens is probably still most recognizable as the James Bond villain Gustav Graves in Die Another Day. But he's been making up for that lately by playing Bond himself on BBC Radio 4.

Bay began filming 13 Hours on April 27 in Malta, as one of his more personal interim projects before the inevitable Transformers 5. There are no release dates set so far, but we can probably expect it in 2016.

Exclusive Royal Night Out VE Day Featurette

Exclusive Royal Night Out VE Day Featurette

Out on the tiles with HRH

Today marks the anniversary of VE Day, May 8 1945, when the forces of good defeated Nazi tyranny and the British Army helped teach Hitler a lesson for pointing those giant arrows at us in Dad’s Army. Seventy years ago even Princess Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) was out on the tiles, doing whatever the royal equivalent of selfies was (one-sies?) and cutting loose with her future subjects for the one and only time. At least, that’s the premise for A Royal Night Out. Liberties have been taken with some of the facts, but, as this new featurette shows, real-life events served as inspiration for this alt-fairy tale.

On princess duties alongside Maps To The Stars actress Gadon is Bel Powley as the flighty, effervescent Margaret. The pair are given a night's pass by King George (Rupert Everett) and the future Queen Mother (Emily Watson), on condition that they’re closely chaperoned and home in good time for royal duties, with failure to comply resulting in instant pumpkin-ification.

Of course, they do fail to comply and Princess Elizabeth soon falls reluctantly in with AWOL airman Jack Reynor. Together the pair brave teeming crowds, boozy speakeasies and the tantalising possibility of a Cinderella ending.

It’s all overseen by Becoming Jane’s Julian Jarrold. There’s plenty more on the film in next week’s Empire Podcast when Gadon steps into the podbooth for a yarn. A Royal Night Out arrives in UK cinemas on May 15.

Sam Claflin To Tackle Robin Friday Biopic

Sam Claflin To Tackle Robin Friday Biopic

And returns for The Huntsman

A double dose of Sam Claflin news this fine Friday, and appropriately one of the stories is Friday-related. The actor will be playing Robin Friday, the ill-starred but supremely louche Reading and Cardiff striker, in the long-gestating film of his life. His agent has been busy because Claflin has also signed on to return for Snow White And The Huntsman sequel, The Huntsman, in the role of Snow White’s love interest, William.

There’s no danger he’ll mix the two up and scythe down Snow White with a two-footed lunge, largely because Kristen Stewart is unlikely to return as the mirror-bothering princess. Instead Claflin, who’s earmarked for a small supporting role, will be joined by franchise newbies Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt, with Charlize Theron back as Queen Ravenna. Nick Frost, Rob Brydon, Alexandra Roach and Sheridan Smith are also aboard.

More intriguing is the Friday story. This one promises a tearaway tale of a volatile talent as dangerous on the dance floor as in the box. Claflin, a dedicated Norwich fan, will be depicting a renegade character who lit up both the football league and an enormous number of cigarettes during a ‘70s heyday. He died tragically young but burned brightly in a way that should lend itself to a fizzy biopic.

"When I was writing The Robin Friday Story [in 1998] with Guigsy all those years ago", said co-biographer Paolo Hewitt in 2012. "I kept saying it would make a great film". Hewitt and Julian Stone have penned the script, with Film Agency Wales contributing to funding.
