Though he’s mostly been rounding up people to play the gunslingers who agree to help a town, Antoine Fuqua is also recruiting actors as villains. He now has Jason Momoa in talks to play a heavy in The Magnificent Seven.
Assuming he makes a final deal, Momoa will be one of the toughs backing up the primary big bad, a robber baron that targets a small town squatting near a gold mine. When the villains kill several people in their attempt to take the place over, a young widow (Haley Bennett) hires a bounty hunter (Denzel Washington) to dispatch the bad guys, supplying him with the necessary funds to hire six gunmen to help him in his mission. Which is where Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Luke Grimes, Wagner Moura and Vincent D’Onofrio and others come into play.
John Lee Hancock and True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto are among those who have contributed to the screenplay, adapted from the classic Seven Samurai, which became the first crack at a Magnificent Seven in 1960. Fuqua’s version recently locked in a January 2017 release across the pond and in the UK. He’s scheduled to start the bullets flying later this month once the rest of the ensemble has been cast.
Momoa will be more on the side of justice – literally – when he plays Aquaman in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, which is out here on March 25 next year.
While rodeo bull riding was the backdrop for Dallas Buyers Club and this year’s Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Longest Ride, it’s set to get even more of a starring role thanks to Emily Blunt and Bronco Belle.
Writer/director Khurram Longi is busy rounding up the rest of the cast for the film, which follows the exploits of Raylene Jackson (Blunt), a woman with a chip on her shoulder who harbours a dream of becoming a champion bull rider. She’ll need some support from an old trainer seeking redemption and a shameless hustler of a promoter to make it in a highly competitive field.
According to Longi, the idea was born during a road trip across America. “We were driving down from New York and ended up in Texas where by chance we stumbled across the world of rodeo. I had never been to one before. We started to follow the rodeo trail and the world inspired me to write this script. During the writing I was influenced by films like Thelma And Louise and The Colour Of Money,” he tells Screen International. “For me this is a female Rocky-on-a-bull type of film. I thought it was a great hook. After seeing Emily in Edge Of Tomorrow I thought she would be perfect so had her in my mind as I was writing it.” Embankment Films is taking the project to Cannes to sell the rights before Longi kicks off shooting in the autumn.
Blunt will be seen in crime drama Sicario and the Snow White And The Huntsman sequel, simply titled The Huntsman. She’s also providing a voice for indie ‘toon Animal Crackers.
Not content with starring together in Sherlock and working on the Hobbit films, Martin Freeman has found another place to join Benedict Cumberbatch. He’s the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the company announcing that he’s part of Captain America: Civil War.
Joe and Anthony Russo are busy directing the latest Cap outing from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. And the stuffed cast already includes established Marvel types including Chris Evans as the title character, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier and Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones. New faces this time include the introduction of Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther and Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo. Oh, and Spider-Man, whenever he gets officially cast.
As for Freeman, his role is being kept under wraps for now in true Marvel style, so we’ll have to see which side of the conflict about superhero issues he falls on and whether he’s playing a known comics character or someone for the movie. Also unknown? His future, and whether this is a one-film deal or if he’ll be showing up elsewhere, which would mean he’d have more of a chance to share the screen with Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.
"From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," says Marvel chief Kevin Feige. "We couldn't be more honoured or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
Freeman will be back for more Sherlock at the end of the year with the special episode, followed by a new run of three in 2016. He’s currently at work on Tina Fey-starring based-on-reality war correspondent comedy Fun House.
