Zack Snyder Pitched A Watchmen Series To HBO

Zack Snyder Pitched A Watchmen Series To HBO

Official current status: unknown

Zack-Snyder-Watchmen-HBO

Zack Snyder is the man overseeing Warner Bros./DC’s movie universe at the moment, with the Justice League’s fledgling film days in full swing. But back in 2009, he tackled a much more controversial title, adapting Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen graphic novel. And if he has his way, the darker take on DC superheroics could be back – on TV

Collider has heard that Snyder has apparently pitched some idea for a Watchmen series to HBO. No details were revealed about what form the story might take or where in the characters’ chronology the series could be set, but with Moore’s original tale and the more recent prequel run of comics (that sound you hear is Moore preparing a curse for everyone involved), there’s plenty of source material to draw from.

Beyond a brief statement from HBO ("preliminary discussions regarding Watchmen have occurred but we have no additional information and no deals are in place," as sent to The Hollywood Reporter), there’s no way of knowing whether this will actually go through. In the negative column, you have the fact that the movie didn’t do that well at the box office (despite its noble attempt to tell a complicated story in film form) and HBO is notoriously picky about what it puts on screen – several big projects, including those from directors such as David Fincher and Noah Baumbach have either been shut down during production or didn’t even make it past the pilot stage. Still, if anyone is going to actually make the series, HBO is clearly the best choice, what with relaxed restrictions on what can be seen on screen and that handy corporate synergy thing with Warner Bros.

We wouldn’t bet on seeing anything just yet, even if this does happen, but we can’t deny there is some appeal to letting the likes of Silk Spectre, Nite Owl, The Comedian and Rorschach live again in a medium that suits their longer, layered stories. Still, we can’t shake the image of Snyder looking up at some masked HBO executive and shouting “commission us!” with the suit whispering, “No…”

New Doctor Who Spin-Off Announced

New Doctor Who Spin-Off Announced

Class will be in session starting 2016

Doctor-Who-Spin-off

In its current incarnation – that is, since it returned to our screens in 2005 – Doctor Who has spawned three main telly spin-offs in Torchwood, Totally Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Now, in the Peter Capaldi era, we can expect a fourth, with teen-centric series Class on the way next year.

The Beeb has announced the new BBC Three show, which will be overseen by novelist Patrick Ness. Class, which will be set in a modern-day school in London, will span eight 45-minute episodes in its initial run.

"I'm astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself," said Ness in a statement. There's so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories and to work with Steven Moffat and producer Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy.

"I can't wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-levels.”

The writer, whose books includes Chaos Walking, The Knife Of Never Letting Go, The Ask And The Answer and A Monster Calls (which has been turned into a film by Juan Antonio Bayona), has been working with Moffat to develop the show. "No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we're bringing his brilliant story-telling into Doctor Who,” said the parent show's big boss.

Doctor Who is back on our screens now with the ninth series featuring Capaldi’s Time Lord and Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald.
