Lionsgate Adapting The Kingkiller Chronicle For Movies And More

Lionsgate Adapting The Kingkiller Chronicle For Movies And More

Patrick Rothfuss' fantasy books are part of a new deal

KingKiller-Chronicle-Lionsgate

With Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy finished and Game Of Thrones unlikely to head to cinema screens any time soon, studios are naturally looking for fantasy source material to fuel the next big franchise. Lionsgate thinks it might be on to a winner, securing a big deal for Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicle series.

Rothfuss’ series, which kicked off in 2007, includes an anchor trilogy (with the third book likely next year) and three novellas set in the same world. The focus is told in three time streams: the present, in which the protagonist, Kvothe, is dictating his life’s story to a historian of sorts; the past, a first-person account of Kvothe’s life, and lastly, in chronologically cloudy parables and stories peppered throughout the books. It’s full of clever narrative tricks and meta subplots, and studios have been circling for a while, not least after Rothfuss took several meetings at the San Diego Comic-Con this summer. At one point, Fox Television was going to produce a series based on the books, but now Lionsgate and producer Robert Lawrence have much more expansive plans across different forms of media.

“Honestly, I've never been very interested in a straight-up movie deal,” Rothfuss says in a statement carried by The Hollywood Reporter. “But Lionsgate was willing to work out something different, a multi-platform deal where they develop the films, TV series, and games simultaneously. That will give us the screen time to develop the characters and show off the world. What's more, through this whole process, they've treated me with amazing respect. I never thought a studio would approach me as a creative partner who understands how stories work." Given that his books sell almost as well as George R.R. Martin’s, we can see why the studio was interested.

First Trailer For The Choice

First Trailer For The Choice

Let your heart decide

Though the most recent adaptations of his work – The Best Of Me and The Longest Ride – didn’t exactly set audience hearts aflame, the Nicholas Sparks romance factory keeps on clanking away. The latest to roll off the production line is The Choice, which finds Benjamin Walker and Teresa Palmer as the star-crossed lovers of the moment. Check out the first trailer below.

The Choice hit book shelves in April 2009 and focuses on Travis Parker (Walker), a man who would appear to be living the perfect life. He has a good job, great friends and the ideal living situation in a beautiful waterfront North Carolina home. Where women are concerned, he’s quite content to be the love-‘em-and-leave-‘em type until Gabby Holland (Palmer) moves in next door. Though there's initially more frustration than romance between them – and she already has a long-term boyfriend – they’re destined for one another, at least until the robot uprising occurs, and techno-devastation is wrought an accident leaves Gabby badly hurt and Travis terrified he’ll lose her.

Ross Katz handled directorial chores, with Demolition’s Bryan Sipe writing the adaptation. Alexandra Daddario, Maggie Grace, Tom Welling, Tom Wilkinson, Brad James and Heather Ashley Chase are all part of the film, which will attempt to make US cinemagoers swoon on February 5 before taking its chances with us on March 4.

Illustrated Poster For Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse

Illustrated Poster For Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse

Dyb dyb dyb, dob dob dob, bash the undead in the gob

Who would you call to battle a rising tide of the undead? The police? The army? Simon Pegg? If none of them were available, you might have to turn to scouts, as is the case with Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse, which is aping Drew Struzan with its new poster.

Scouts-Guide-Illustrated-Poster

The movie finds three scouts, lifelong friends, who are trying to attend the party marked as the social event of the year. But instead of having fun, they must team up with a tough cocktail waitress to try and save their town from a zombie invasion. Can these unlikely heroes make it through the undead apocalypse? They’ll need all their scouting skills, but we’re sure success would lead to the best badge ever created.

Aiming at a largely low-fi approach to the effects to give it that extra kick of nostalgia (with a few digital tricks added in for good measure), the film features Tye Sheridan in the cast alongside Logan Miller, Halston Sage, Sarah Dumont, Patrick Schwarzenegger and David Koechner, with regular Paranormal Activity contributor Christopher Landon on writing and directing duty.

Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse hits US screens on October 30 before making its way here on November 6.

Is This the Last Season of Bones?

David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel, Bones | Photo Credits: Ray Mickshaw/Fox

Because of an 11th-hour renewal last year, Bones' Season 10 finale felt an awful lot like a series finale as Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) made the difficult decision to leave their increasingly dangerous jobs behind and focus on their (soon-to-expand) family.

Alas, Fox did
