Cate Blanchett Will Be Lucille Ball

Cate Blanchett Will Be Lucille Ball

In a new biopic written by Aaron Sorkin

Cate-Blanchett-Lucille-Ball-Biopic

Here’s an enticing prospect: Cate Blanchett starring as Lucille Ball? It could happen, as production company Escape Artists is looking to put together a biopic package that includes Blanchett starring as the entertainment icon and a script that has Aaron Sorkin’s brand of wordplay

The Hollywood Reporter’s story mentions that Sorkin hasn’t definitely signed on yet, but Ball’s story is surely a tempting draw for the writer, particularly since he could use an outlet to demonstrate he can write great female characters after criticisms on projects such as The Social Network and The Newsroom.

The actress and producer was a driving force alongside then husband Desi Arnaz for shows such as I Love Lucy, The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, Here’s Lucy and Life With Lucy. Before her TV stardom, she worked extensively in film and is still regarded as a comedy legend. She was also the first woman to own a studio, Desilu Productions, which helped get Star Trek off the ground and was eventually sold to Gulf + Western, which also owned Paramount. Witty, warm and smart, she led a fascinating life and now her children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., are hoping that she’ll get her big screen biopic due with this authorized film.

Blanchett has several films on the way, including Carol (out November 27), which is already drawing awards talk, based-on-reality news biopic Truth and Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups, neither of which have UK release dates yet.

Pilou Asbæk Will Be Game Of Thrones' Euron Greyjoy

Pilou Asbæk Will Be Game Of Thrones' Euron Greyjoy

The Danish actor will appear in season six

Pilou-Asbæk-Game-Of-Thrones

As Game Of Thrones’ TV adaptation ventures into somewhat uncharted territory for its sixth season, more cast members are being added. But the show isn’t straying completely away from the books, and one character definitely from George R.R. Martin’s saga is Euron Greyjoy, who will be played by Danish thesp Pilou Asbæk.

Of course, at this point, we have to raise the Spoiler Warning banner (it’s basically someone trying to claw their eyes out sitting in front of a monitor) in case you don’t want to know anything more – not that there is much in any regard. As you might surmise from the name, he’s the uncle of Theon (Alfie Allen) and Yara (Gemma Whelan), and brother to Patrick Malahide’s Balon. A warrior known for his sea-faring skills, he’s the captain of a vessel called The Silence and is known for his quick temper. We’re guessing he’s not going to be too thrilled when he learns about the whole “Reek” thing.

He’s the latest addition to the show for its latest season, with Ian McShane and Max von Sydow already aboard alongside the surviving regulars. The show will be back on our screens next April. Asbæk might be most familiar from his recent role in Lucy, and he’ll be seen next year as Pontius Pilate in the new Ben Hur, which lands on March 11.

Uzo Aduba Joins American Pastoral

Uzo Aduba Joins American Pastoral

David Strathairn and more also aboard Ewan Mcgregor's film

Uzo-Aduba-And-More-American-Pastoral

With Ewan McGregor busy preparing to make the Philip Roth adaptation American Pastoral as his directorial debut, he’s adding more cast members to the ensemble. In his latest round of hires, he has Orange Is The New Black’s Uzo Aduba ready to jump aboard alongside David Strathairn, Peter Riegert and Valorie Curry.

Set during the Vietnam War years, American Pastoral follows Seymour ‘Swede’ Levov (McGregor), a once all-conquering high-school athlete, who’s married to a beauty queen (Jennifer Connelly) and runs the business he’s inherited from his dad. All seems well in Swede’s world until his daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) joins the countercultural clamour of the time, signing up as a revolutionary and committing a fatal act of violence that throws all their lives into chaos.

Lakeshore Entertainment has been trying to get this one on to screens since 2003, as it had been languishing at Paramount and the studio let the option lapse. It has since been through the directorial hands of Fisher Stevens and then Phillip Noyce. But it’s McGregor who will finally make it, working from a script by John Romano, and kicking off shooting later this month in Pittsburgh.

Ansel Elgort Finds Code Name Veil

Ansel Elgort Finds Code Name Veil

Starring in the CIA drama

Ansel-Elgort-Code-Name-Veil

Though he’s more often been found in the teen-targeting titles such as the Divergent series and The Fault In Our Stars, Ansel Elgort is switching things up with a variety of projects. He’s now attached to star in CIA drama Code Name Veil.

Matt Billingsly wrote the script for the film, which is inspired by real events. Elgort’s role is that of a fresh-faced CIA agent in 1980s Beirut who investigates attacks against the US embassy and a Marine barracks during one of the particularly violent periods in 1983. Things take an even more dangerous turn when his station chief is kidnapped and the inexperienced agent has to figure out some creative ways to save the man he considers a mentor.

Kill The Messenger’s Michael Cuesta is on board to direct the film, which doesn’t have a start date yet. Elgort, however, will next be seen in the next Divergent instalment, Allegiant: Part 1, which is scheduled to hit UK cinemas on March 18 next year. He’s also preparing to work on Edgar Wright’s new film, Baby Driver, which screeches over here on March 17, 2017 and really can’t quite arrive quickly enough.
