Kenneth Branagh Boards Artemis Fowl Adaptation For Disney

Kenneth Branagh Boards Artemis Fowl Adaptation For Disney

Playwright Conor McPherson is in talks to write a new script

Kenneth-Branagh-Artemis-Fowl

Though there was chatter about Kenneth Branagh being sounded out to come back into the Marvel fold for Thor: Ragnarok, it appears he’s interested in a different corner of Disney’s sprawling empire. According to Variety, he’s now on board to develop and potentially direct the long-gestating adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl books.

The Fowl series, which began with the eponymous tome in 2001 and has continued through seven successive books, follows Artemis Fowl II. A young criminal mastermind with serious parental issues, our hero (who often edges more towards the antihero type) uses his genius and guile in a search for his dad. Oh, and he also plots to extort gold from the fairy folk through a kidnapping scheme, which slaps a great big target on his back courtesy of some of the most dangerous creatures around. But his misadventures do help shape him into the man he’ll become.

This one has been in development for years, originally by Harvey Weinstein in 2001 when he was still happily collaborating with Disney via Miramax. It went through the now standard batch of script drafts, but nothing managed to perk executives’ interest enough to secure a production order. Things went further south when Weinstein left under a dark cloud, but brightened when he agreed to work with the Mouse House in 2013 to get development of the adaptation back on track. Michael Goldenberg was attached then to combine the first two books, Artemis Fowl and Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident into one movie, but there’s no word yet on whether that’s still the case.

As also reported by The Tracking Board, the new team should consist of Branagh and playwright Conor McPherson, who is in talks to write the script. However the new screenplay turns out, it’ll have to wait for Branagh to call the shots – he’s already committed to a new big screen version of Murder On The Orient Express for 20th Century Fox.

Alex Kingston Headed Back To Doctor Who

Alex Kingston Headed Back To Doctor Who

River Song will meet Peter Capaldi for Christmas

River-Song-Returns-Who-Christmas

In her more recent appearances, Alex Kingston’s River Song has become something of a divisive character for Doctor Who fans. Some finds her insouciant charms liven things up whenever she crashes into the Doctor’s life, while others find her grating and overused. Depending on your thoughts towards her, she’ll be back to pester the Doctor – in this case Peter Capaldi’s incarnation – for this year’s Christmas special.

Announced by the Beeb, the now traditional special episode is being kept wrapped up in shiny Santa-covered paper for now, with no details on what will happen in the episode or who is joining Kingston as the rest of the guest cast (so no spoilers, sweetie). But we suppose having her anywhere near the Who team’s base of operations is enough to start tongues wagging, so the decision was taken to announce her return.

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special,” says Kingston in the statement. “Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”

And Moffat seems happy to have her back. Which might not be surprising since he created her… “Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who - and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song? The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time...”

Doctor Who will return to our screens for a ninth series of 12 episodes on September 19, with the Christmas special following, as usual, on December 25.

Mississippi Grind Trailer Bets On Drama

Mississippi Grind Trailer Bets On Drama

Ben Mendelsohn's struggling poker veteran needs help from Ryan Reynolds

Ben Mendelsohn rightly gathers a lot of kudos for his performances, and Mississippi Grind looks like it offers him just the sort of slightly broken, scuffed-around-the-edges sort he does so well. Check out the UK trailer for the new drama.

Mississippi Grind finds Mendelsohn as Gerry, a down-at-heel, inveterate gambler who just doesn’t seem to be having much luck of late. The cards aren’t his friends, and he’s been racking up debts to… well, just about everyone, and especially to Alfre Woodard’s Sam, who is not above sending her enforcers around to duff him him when he can’t pay.

But when Gerry meets the charismatic and seemingly lucky Curtis (Ryan Reynolds), a light goes off in his head – the young man could be his lucky charm, just what he needs to help him at a huge stakes poker tournament in New Orleans. As the fledgling buddies take a road trip to the venue, they encounter new friends, old flames and all that life has to throw at them.

Mississippi-Grind-Ppster

Coming from the Half Nelson writing/directing duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the movie had a relatively quiet release across the pond, but earned good notices, particularly for Mendelsohn and Reynolds. It’ll be out in the UK on October 23 if you want to take a punt on it.

New Poster For Spielberg's Bridge Of Spies

New Poster For Spielberg's Bridge Of Spies

Hanks Over Troubled Water

Following the Saul Bass-inspired previous promo image, here's a slightly more traditional new poster for Steven Spielberg's Bridge Of Spies: same face, different design. Once again teaming the director with his old Saving Private Ryan and The Terminal cohort Tom Hanks, this one's a spy thriller. Could you tell?

The story is based on the true-life tale of James Donovan (Hanks); a lawyer who was pushed headfirst into the Cold War during the 1960s when he had to negotiate for the release of downed U2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers (Austin Stowell) after the airman was shot down over Russia.

The title refers to the popular Cold War nickname for what's now the Glienicke Bridge connecting Wannsee and Potsdam: East and West Germany at the time the film is set. Its official name then was the Bridge of Unity, but it garnered its alternate moniker due to its notoriety as a prisoner exchange point for Western and Soviet powers.

Hanks and Stowell's supporting cast for the film includes Amy Ryan, Alan Alda, Billy Magnussen and the suddenly ubiquitous Mark Rylance. Spielberg's other regular honcho John Williams composed the score.

Filming took place in Berlin and New York last year, and Bridge Of Spies is out in the UK on November 6.
