Geostorm Flies To 2017

Geostorm Flies To 2017

The Gerard Butler action thriller is on the move

Geostorm-moves-release

If you were looking forward to seeing Gerard Butler punching a hurricane helping to stop a weatherpocalypse in Geostorm… Just wait longer. The film has been pushed from a planned October 2016 release to a January 2017 slot in the US.

Butler plays a charming but stubborn satellite designer called in to help when the orbiting devices that control the Earth’s weather start to go haywire, leading to fears that the worst storm humanity has ever known could soon befall us all. Jim Sturgess, meanwhile, is Butler’s estranged brother, with whom he’ll have to work if he’s to stop the meteorological meltdown.

No reason has been given for the shift, though there’s always a chance that disaster movie specialist Dean Devlin – here making his film directorial debut – asked for more time to finish what is probably a big effects job and potentially to move the pic into a more favourable slot. Still, the January berth it now occupies was already full of potential movies, including the new Magnificent Seven, DreamWorks Animation's Boss Baby ‘toon, Sony’s planned take on The Dark Tower and Lionsgate's Power Rangers. Looks like Butler will have more than just the weather to worry about.

With Abbie Cornish, Robert Sheehan, Ed Harris, Amr Waked, Katheryn Winnick and Andy Garcia in the cast, Geostorm should be with us around the same time it finally hits the US, given that it had been scheduled for almost the same day here as across the pond originally.

Karen Gillan Will Be Part Of The Circle

Karen Gillan Will Be Part Of The Circle

She's joining the tech thriller

Karen-Gillan-The-Circle

With the likes of Tom Hanks, John Boyega and Emma Watson in its cast, James Ponsoldt’s tech thriller The Circle is adding one more good name to the list: Karen Gillan will be part of the team.

Ponsoldt adapted the script from Dave Eggers' 2013 book, which follows a young woman (Watson) hired to work for the titular internet megacorp. It’s a Google-like affair, with parties, goodies, music and the promise of being on the very edge of new concepts, and boasts Hanks and Boyega among its ranks. The big idea for the company is in uniting users' email, social media, banking and online shopping in its universal operating system as one identity, with this leading to a new age of transparency and civility. But, of course, there is a downside to the whole thing, one which Watson’s character soon discovers…

Gillan is on board to play Annie, a warm, funny, confident and extremely intelligent member of the company. She’ll be back on screens in Ti West’s vengeful Western In A Valley Of Violence, and has a role in Adam McKay’s financial drama The Big Short. Plus, she should be getting back into prosthetics and make-up to return as Nebula for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, due to land here on April 28, 2017.

Josh Gad On To Play Roger Ebert

Josh Gad On To Play Roger Ebert

Joining Will Ferrell in Russ & Roger Go Beyond

Josh-Gad-Russ-And-Roger-Go-Beyond

The unlikely – but true – story of how film journalist Roger Ebert and thrifty-budget cinematic showman Russ Meyer came to work together was always destined to become a film. Russ & Roger Go Beyond has been developing for a while and Josh Gad has locked in the role of Ebert

Will Ferrell was attached to this one first, after flirting with the idea last August. Since then, Michael Winterbottom has come aboard to direct, working on a new draft of the script with Partridge/Veep laugh-generating experts Neil and Rob Gibbons.

Originally Written by Saturday Night Live and Simpsons veteran Christopher Cluess, the comedy focuses on Meyer's late 1960s desire to combine his pulp talents with big studio backing, hashing out a deal with 20th Century Fox boss Richard Zanuck to produce something for a low budget. Targeting soft-core tale Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, Meyer approached Ebert, then a low-on-the-roster film critic for the Chicago Sun Times, who had written one of the few positive reviews of a Meyer film. Despite the seeming gulf between their sensibilities, they meshed well, partied hard and ended up producing a film that struggled with the ratings board (eventually landing an X) and sparking a friendship that would last until Meyer died in 2004.

Gad had been circling the Ebert role for a while, and needed to figure out if his schedule could accommodate the shoot, set for later this year. He’ll be heard in the Angry Birds movie, which will be flung into our cinemas on May 13 next year. And he’s also part of the cast for Disney’s new live-action Beauty And The Beast, though we’ll have to wait until March 17, 2017 for that one.

Vincent Cassel Joins The New Bourne Film

Vincent Cassel Joins The New Bourne Film

He'll be a villain...

Vincent-Cassel-Bourne-Villain

With shooting set to kick off soon, Paul Greengrass is busily gathering the remaining cast for the next, as-yet-untitled Jason Bourne collaboration with Matt Damon. He now has a primary nemesis in line for our hero, with Vincent Cassel putting the film in its sights.

Exactly what he’ll be doing remains a secret for now, though Variety’s sources have heard he’ll be an assassin in the vein of Clive Owen and Edgar Ramirez, who have been among those to tussle with Bourne through the franchise to date.

He joins a cast that already includes Julia Stiles (back as Nicky), Alicia Vikander and Tommy Lee Jones for a fresh Bourne outing whose plot is likewise being kept quiet. Damon, who is working on the film alongside Greengrass and the director’s co-writer Christopher Rouse, recently alluded to this film exploring a post-Edward Snowden world and one that has been hit hard by financial collapse and austerity.

The new film will arrive in UK cinemas on July 29 next year, having shot in Greece and Las Vegas, among other locales. Cassel, last seen here in Child 44, will next show up in the likes of Partisan, Mon roi and Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only The End Of The World.
