With the likes of Tom Hanks, John Boyega and Emma Watson in its cast, James Ponsoldt’s tech thriller The Circle is adding one more good name to the list: Karen Gillan will be part of the team.
Ponsoldt adapted the script from Dave Eggers' 2013 book, which follows a young woman (Watson) hired to work for the titular internet megacorp. It’s a Google-like affair, with parties, goodies, music and the promise of being on the very edge of new concepts, and boasts Hanks and Boyega among its ranks. The big idea for the company is in uniting users' email, social media, banking and online shopping in its universal operating system as one identity, with this leading to a new age of transparency and civility. But, of course, there is a downside to the whole thing, one which Watson’s character soon discovers…
Gillan is on board to play Annie, a warm, funny, confident and extremely intelligent member of the company. She’ll be back on screens in Ti West’s vengeful Western In A Valley Of Violence, and has a role in Adam McKay’s financial drama The Big Short. Plus, she should be getting back into prosthetics and make-up to return as Nebula for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, due to land here on April 28, 2017.
